So I saw that Nvidia just released 2 new GPU's , the GTX980 and the 970 . At this moment I own a HD7950 which is pretty good but I think it's time for a upgrade (Used to have crossfire but one broke down :( ).
My current PC setup is :
AMD FX8350 Stock
Asrock 990FX Extreme4
4x4GB Corsair Hyper-X
128Gb Corsair Hyper-X SSD
1TB Seagate HDD
Corsair RM850 PSU
Gigabyte HD7950 Windforce (Voltage locked)
and H100 CPU Cooler
I'm thinking about the 970 since it performs nearly as well as a 780ti at such a lower price , tbh I think it's a best buy ... but how much of a performance increase will I see if I get one of these babies (In percentages pls ... why ? because I love percentages).
I play at 1080p which atm is enough for me but some games won't run smoothly on Ultra :D but will run just fine on high ... I need that extra power so I can get all the eye candy.
What do you think , should I get a 970 or save up for a 980 ?
AMD have reacted to nVidia in their normal way by dropping prices. You could swap out your older AMD with a newer one. They will chuck in some games to easy the pain of upgrading. I'm not suggesting that there is anything wrong with the nVidia 970 because there isn't, it's a great card from all accounts.
The refresh rate of your monitor should be high if you want to get all the juice the new cards offer. If it is 60 Hz and overclocking doesn't increase it much, then the gtx 770 or r9 280/x will suffice.
I would wait until early Q1 or maybe Q2 next year for the 20nm GPUs form both companies. I have a GTX 760 and basically in the same boat as you, and tahts what I am doing.
