Should I Upgrade To Windows 10 From 8.1?

Since day one with Win 8.1 I have not got along with it at all. I only use my PC for gaming and web use. I'm considering doing it because its a free upgrade.

I've only got two questions:

  1. Will I lose everything when upgrading to Windows 10?

  2. Has anyone had any real bad issues with the OS so far?

Cheers

No.

If you have nvidia it WAS broken at launch. but from my understanding it has been fixed.

But there are other things to take into consideration. when upgrading make sure you don't click "Express Install" if you do it will turn on Cortana, and "Privacy" issues people continue to complain about.

I made a thread on the "Need to Know" about Windows 10. (Just ignore the Nvidia issues I've mentioned in the post) they have been fixed.

  1. No, only if you wipe the drive and do a clean install.
  2. I havent, just be sure you understand the privacy settings. Apart from that its a nice OS.

Another quick one mate what settings should I have instead of what Microsoft want me to have?

When doing custom install just make sure everything is turned off.

The privacy settings that they don't want you to know about lol tinfoil hat time

Well essentially its an OS built around an always online component.

I would suggest to go for it, just make sure that in privacy options you opt out from everything and you use local account instead of microsoft ( eg. hotmail, office or whatever with .com) ...

You will loose "Metro screen", hot-corners, non-intuitive gestures and the occasional WTF effect related to that metro screen. My productivity has been greatly increased with new start menu, new task view and multiple desktops. The only thing that does not work for me is Oculus DK2.

I do not have privacy paranoia. All good software have telemetrics. The ones that don't have it are just bloated with unused features and UI elements because developers just don't not know which 95% of their buttons and option never get used.
My software does not have it but just because I am too lazy to implement it, secure data, make a database and analysis software... but then I have to occasionally annoy everyone to take surveys, write feedback and send crash reports by hand.

If anything, just upgrade it to Win10 to have it activated, and then revert back to 8. That way you will at least be able to upgrade for free in 1,3,10 years.

As of today windows 10 users will start being blocked from torrent sites because the admins deem the os to be a security nightmare .
In other words if you upgrade to 10 say goodbye to torrent sites and say hello to an active scanner that looks for drm or lack there of on your PC

Every version of windows there are similar rumors. One of the geek friends is avoiding me now because he is ashamed that last 10+ years of his DRM paranoia never came true. The last time I read about that torrent sites, few days ago, it was related to some unknown sites trying to get publicity with those statements. Even if that was true and there is no 2-click solution to it within 2 days, then just get Pi or some old crappy machine with Win<10 and use it as your media hub.
