Should i upgrade my CPU

So i have a dilema. In march its my birthday and im going to upgrade but i dont know what to upggrade.

Here is the original post

https://teksyndicate.com/forum/build-pc/upgrading-hard/191785 (Long read)

Here are some of the possibilities

Original Upgrade: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/vD9Hbv.

Edited Original : http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/W24fRB

I5: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/RNZTVn

I7 curve ball: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/w6B3jX

FX 9590: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/BMrjsY

So the main question is what cpu is better I5 vs I7 vs FX 9590 for my upgrade purpose or should i stick with just a gpu and mobo upgrade atm and then upgrade my cpu to the FX 9590?

What are the Pros and cons over Amd vs Intel. And which is best for my upgrade purpose. Mainly wanting to game more but that is explained in the OP

Any help is appreciated

congrats on the upgrade possibility. Just going to give some advice not to start threads with Intel vs Amd as the title.. No bueno.. can possibly start a flame war, each has its pros and cons. AMD processors are a solid choice and you can save money that route (if money is a concern), and Intel is higher priced, but offers better performance.

I run a 2600k overclocked on a p67 motherboard. The computer is fast, and can compete with 3770's and even maybe Haswell CPU's, but the biggest bottleneck in my system is the fact that I only have 16 pci-express lanes. This means that I am stuck with one graphics card and pci-e 2.0@16x or if I split then I have x8 by x8.

Since gaming is your main thing, than I would go for AMD if just to save a few bucks, newer intel processors have improved instruction codes for faster rendering (i'm repeating this from what I read somewhere and also some benchmarks I recall seeing). So for things like rendering and CAD work I would stick with Intel. Someone else had a thread where they mentioned upgrading from an AMD processor to Intel and not seeing much improvement in gaming.

TLDR: AMD is good for gaming if price is an issue, like mystery said, focus on your gpu that's wht makes a gaming pc.

ok thanks very helpful i saw the post you mention and it brings up a great point but now the question is, is it worth upgrading the cpu and if so to what a fx 8350 or 9590 or what. I am saving money aswell by doing jobs so the possibility of upgrading both is quite high

upgrading to a higherend gpu like GTX970 and 290X the cpu is gonne make sense in allot of games. Since your motherboard isnt capable enough to overclock a FX 8 core, you need to upgrade your mobo anyway, if you want a cpu upgrade.

In this case, in my opinnion i would go with a 4690K simply because its just better in gaming. it has better single threaded performance on which 90% of the games still relay on. especialy on 1080p. a FX8 core cpu no matter how high you overclock it still falls behind even by a locked haswell i5 @3.4Ghz.

You also not gonne save any cash going with AMD, because if you wanne overclock a FX8 core, to 4.8GHz, to get anywhere near intel haswell i5 performance, you also gonne need an expensive mobo, and decent cooling. If you think about these extra costs, a locked i5 with a cheap H series chipset board for example would be cheaper, but will perform simply better in gaming. And them im not even speak about a 4690K.

In my opinnion its not worth it anymore to invest in a 3 year old platform. The single threaded performance of the FX cpu´s cant even keep up with Sandybridge.

But im not saying that AMD cpu´s are bad, because they are still very good, i have one my self. But i simply cannot deny the fact, that in in pure gaming, they simply show their age against haswell. If you do more then just gaming, like 3d rendering, or virtualization, for these kind of tasks the FX 8 core cpu´s are realy great. But for pure gaming a haswell i5 is simply the better allrounder now days.

Also about the guy that made a thread about not much performance gain, going from amd to intel. There was probably something wrong with his setup, because he claimed in a post on page 2, that he went back from intel to amd, and lost 30fps in ARMA III and 35fps in BF4 multiplayer, well i would call that an significaten loss in performance, or lets say an significant CPU bottleneck on the AMD side to his GTX970 Sli.

I personaly think, that AMD is basicly still fine if you go with a midrange GPU. and be happy happy with the performance you get out of a setup like that. But if you want great performance with a highend GPU R9-290 (x) / GTX970 / GTX980, then i would realy recommend intel at the moment.

I realy hope that DX12 api, is going to be a game changer for AMD cpu´s, That DX12 is gonne take allot of the overhead away from the cpu....

Fingers crossed.

Ok so your saying at my price range with all of the upgrades with the case, ssd and psu to go over to intel? This would leave nothing left in that budget but at the moment this is all pure speculation and my parents could surprise the heck out of me or i could get less its really hard to say atm. Lets hope the win the lottery or something then i might not have to wait till my birthday :P Is it worth seeing the effects of the DX12 before making the step i have till march anyway

Thats why i said in your other thread, i would upgrade a gpu first, and you seem to need a case, and SSD. you can allways upgrade cpu + mobo lateron, if you are not happy with the performance overall.

You see your current GPU 7770 is realy old, and if you realy wanne see increase in gaming performance, you simply should upgrade the GPU first which is the most important.

If you upgrade to a Sapphire 290 TriX for example, you will realy gonne see some decent improvements in the gaming performance. and smoothness. no matter if your cpu would slightly bottleneck the gpu, there will be a massive increase anyway.

ok thanks for all the help its really appreciated
