Should I switch to Ubuntu/Linux?

If you're interested, I've got a Jackson RR32. Randy Rhoads style, 24 J-frets. I don't play any more and it's sitting in the corner of my room.

Almost every linux distro uses it http://www.x.org/wiki/

Um, ok, I just reinstalled Ubuntu to run steam (yay!) and ran into a strange problem.

Apperantly  the AMD drivers kill Unity.  There's a bug tracker here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer-updates/+bug/1069199

I tried using the fglrx and fglrx-updates driver with my 6950 and when it booted up, Unity was gone (again, yay!).  Except I couldn't access the top bar, or the unity bar and there were no window borders.
In case you do it, you can fix it by right click desktop -> change wallpaper->all settings->software sources->additional drivers->top option

The first thing I do when I install a linux distro is break it.  Everytime, without fail!

If someone was leaning towards Ubuntu, I'd suggest going to Linux Mint instead. It's pretty much Ubuntu without the Unity nonsense and Mint has even surpassed Ubuntu in marketshare last time I checked.

@omegajimes

Um... What? fglrx?

 *ubuntu. Damn keyboard.

Anyway, I'm going to install it now. I hope things go well.

I thought mint was built on ubuntu? I find any flavor of ubuntu will do the trick

It is. That's what I meant by it's basically Ubuntu without Unity :p

Oh, um, basically there's two different kinds of display drivers for Linux, open source and proprietary.

open source, are well, the open source ones, they work well for most things.  For 3D things, like gaming and such, most people would recommend AMD's proprietary drivers.  The proprietry drivers go by the name "fglrx" in the menus for reasons I won't go into.

If you go ubuntu, try the proprietary drivers at your own risk.

I'll keep it in mind. :) Shoot me an email so I won't forget. 8| Gahhh Tek Syndicate needs emoticons. :/ Like, custom ones. That look like Logan.

@bassfire I do hope that you have an alternate method to access the forum should you run into trouble. Unless what you are using right now is not the computer you are installing linux on. I know a tid bit about linux in that I ran Arch Linux as my main OS in my younger years, I also developed C++ programs on UNIX. Again, good luck and fingers crossed for you.

That's odd. I just read the release notes and comments for Mint 14 and it seemed like 14 is supposed to be a pretty significant upgrade and according to them "more stable". I'm downloading the Cinnamon 32-bit version to test in a VM now... Let's see if I get better luck.

More along the lines of Mint reaches into both Debian and Ubuntu repo's. I'm using Mint 14 at the moment and I'd advise Mint 13 since it's LTS and 14 it really buggy from what I've been having to deal with. Might just be me though. When I installed it X didn't load, no ethernet or wifi and the system was mounting RO. I usually like less of a challenge when I'm setting up an operating system. But that was a problem for 2 weeks ago.

And if all you have is the one computer you might want to consider putting Puppy Linux onto a DVD or USB drive for a back up OS.

No worries. I've got a laptop that I keep around for when I'm messing with my desktop. Ubuntu installed without a hitch. Upon start-up, I was asked to install the drivers for my GPU (a box popped up, asked me to select the driver, and it downloaded and installed.)

Currently installing VirtualBox 4.2 and PlayOnLinux. Here's hoping they work out.

Also, once that is all set up, check your System Log, make sure everything looks okay.

System>Administration>System Log (Or equivalent.) It's similar to Event Viewer on Windows.

VM installed. Windows 7 Starter installed on it. However, I can't get Seamless mode to work. It's greyed out and I'm unable to click it.

As for PoL, it's currently at 6% ('Refreshing PlayoOnLinux') after I clicked on 'install' to install a game.

http://askubuntu.com/questions/136397/seamless-mode-not-working-correctly-in-virtual-box Your answer may be in here somewhere.

No, no answer there. Plus, they're all hosting 64-bit Windows 7 and guesting Ubuntu. I'm Hosting 64-bit Ubuntu trying to guest a 32-bit Windows 7.

I'll post a question there if I can't figure it out.

Also, 13% for PoL. Gonna be a long night.

Trying installing "Guest Additions" from the Devices drop-down menu. You'll have to have your VM turned on and be logged in to install it.

Not sure what I did, but I don't get any menu options on the top bar (what would be called the finder in OS X.) Re-installing the W7 OS on my VM.

Edit; 0130 here. I'm going to bed. Will update with you guys tomorrow/later.

edit; 0151. Got it working.

After being shot down by Linux, I've decided to re-install W7. Linux was just too much of a pain. I tried more than ten times to install my MagicJack (with Wine, PoL, using a VM, etc) and none worked. None of the games that were supported by PoL worked (Skyrim, Borderlands, Bioshock.) I've reluctantly gone crawling back to Winblows.

Perhaps at another time, when little things arent such an importance (or when people realize they should port things to Linux,) I'll try again.
