I found a used AMD FX 9590 processor for $100, should i buy it?
If you have a high end 990FX motherboard and a high end heatsink such as the Noctua NH-D15 or a Corsair 100i something equivalent.
Well im starting to get my parts and ive heard things aboyt the 990fx, good board for future proofing my build? Also would an air cooler be sufficent?
While the price is reasonable, it's never a good idea to buy a used CPU or motherboard unless you know the history and where it was used and how it was used, with the popularity of over clocking buying a used CPU from a source you can't validate is very risky at best.
There is no such thing as "future proof" when it comes to computer hardware, next year (2016) AMD will roll out it's Zen architecture so if you buy a 990fx motherboard or a FX CPU you are buying architecture that is basically at the end of it's development cycle, is this a bad thing? not necessarily since it is totally dependent on what you want and just how long you will use it.
I just finished a build around a 8370 FX processor that I plan on using for at least the next two years by then then Zen stuff will probably be at the price point that the current FX chips are at, which is where I like to be, which is a generation behind so the cost is reasonable, there's nothing wrong with doing this but a lot of folks have to have the latest and greatest bleeding edge stuff which costs a lot of money with very little return on performance but it does give them bragging rights. :)
Well what im wondering if the 990fx will be able to support simesome of the newer chips and the processor is unopened in original packaging.
Also would a medium grade air cooler work for this processor eith minor OC?
Doubtful if the 990fx chip set will work with Zen, it is a totally different architecture so therefor it will require a totally different chip set to take full advantage of it's new features, if what AMD is saying about the CPU is true it will be great, but I wouldn't buy into that hype until it's out into the wild and lots of independent tests have confirmed the claims.
None of that will help you decide, if you have even the slightest interest in over clocking I'd advise you to go with a water cooler like the H100i by Corsair if you have a case that it will fit in, for a stock configuration a decent air cooler should work fine, I can't advise you on which one since I've been on water for several years and have no knowledge of decent air coolers.
@blanger is right. The chances of any existing AMD platform being compatible with the Zen architecture are slim to none. If you're worried about a processor upgrade path, there aren't any platforms that will work for you. Usually the chipset gets updated along with a new processor line.
If the processor is in an unopened box, yeah, that appears to be a great deal. As for air cooling, the Noctua NH-D15, Phanteks PH-TC14PE, and be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 are the top coolers, pretty much in that order.
I can confirm this as teh 990FX is AM3+ socket and Zen is AM4. So no socket compatibility.
And air cooler will be fine but I would not over clock under a mid tier one. YOu would want high end for overclocking that CPU, considering it will hit 5Ghz under its own steam at times. Most of the 8350/20 chips under a Noctua D14's and 15's are still getting up in temperature and are only getting to around 4.8-5.1~Ghz. So the 9590 being able to turbo to 5Ghz at stock will require decent cooling at stock and very good cooling if you plan to OC.
ThaThaThanks for the help guys, if i get the processor what would the best motherboard be for two r9 270's that will be crossfired and be good some possible overclocking without breaking the budget
Nothing 970 based. You want 990FX for sure sorry I am not more specific.
Have you bought those 270's yet?
Yes i have, i got two slughtly used for $190USD.
You'll want a really good board with a good voltage regulator section like this board...

But your going to have to be very careful over clocking a 220w CPU it's power demand will generate a ton of heat you'll have to find a way to dissipate, I'd want a really good PSU with some overhead also, add a couple high end graphic cards and you could easily need a really good quality 1000w PSU to maintain a safe margin for all your hardware.
Well i have two r9 270's but i probably wont overclock the cpu as it turbos to 5GHZ also im thinking of a 750watt but if need be i can aquire a 1000-1200 watt.
I just checked what is required here....

You can punch in all your hardware and it will give you a recommendation, I put in with that CPU and your video cards said 750w so to me a 850 (I like a little margin in case I add hardware after the build) would be ok as long as it's a good quality PSU.
Alright man thanks
