Sharing/Mirror PC output to a TV in a different room?

Hey all!

Hope we’re well and good?

Just wondering how I can do this. Stepdaughter sometimes does gaming (using a web cam) a bit late at night. I go to bed early and can hear her, and I need to sleep so i can work the next day…a typical theme!

So I wondered if I could easily screen mirror to the TV directly under her bedroom? Here’s a rough section, I’ve included the Shield in case it can be used.

My simple brain just went to a long display port cable with an HDMI converter on the end, but I’m stuffed when it comes to USB peripherals. I do have a spare mouse/keyboard, but any thoughts welcome! She’d probably want a web cam down there too.

Thanks!

Chris

ooooooh, thanks. I’ll have a look into that :+1:

Thanks again @diizzy , just wondering but if she wants to do school work and just view Windows/Streaming(teams, zoom, etc.), will moonlight do that as well? I’m a bit uncertain. Thanks! :+1:

Some time ago there was a similar thread, only you are in a better position because LAN and not via the Internet.

Another option is to directly connect the PC to the TV with a long cable, probably rather some transmitter(hdmi/displayport over ethernet) that will amplify the signal and the USB (keyboard, mouse, pad).

Of course you will need a separate cable…

Depending on your needs, you need to select the appropriate transmitter. Optionally, an additional DP/HDMI converter on one side.

A USB HUB is best one that also has its own power supply just in case.
(if the number of ports in the transmitter is not enough)

Or if you want a different approach to long cables then…

Long DP cable as you mentioned and converter to HDMI. However, for USB devices, buy a very long cable / active,

I see such 20 meters at a price of about 30-40,

the only question is whether 20m is enough for you. And then some hub at the end of such a cable and you connect the usb peripherals.

As you can see, there are several options. From software to hardware solutions… Choose what suits you logistically / technically / financially.

Do you rent or own

Tim, it’s got to be said that you’ve shown up a hell of lot on this forum, and helped me loads in the past - so thanks for chiming in again

These bits and bobs you suggest look superb, thank you very much - excellent work! :+1:

The distance involved is, by coincidence very short. The TV in the living room is directly under her computer desk! So the distance involved is only around 3-4m I’d say - roughly 2.5m vertically and a little extra for sideways stuff.

I’m going to look into these and see what I can financially justify, good stuff!!

own - and I’ve got no issue bashing the crap out the place! Am in the construction industry and all that!

You can do it 2 ways
Quick and dirty hole in the floor/ceiling
Or the pain the ass but more aesthetic run cable in the walls

Personally, I’d do hole in the floor but with a optical HDMI cable

What you should keep in mind with “HDMI over Ethernet” adapters is that many doesn’t handle other refresh rates than 50 and 60Hz and some doesn’t output 1080p but trascodes it into another resolution and upscale it.

I’m happy with chasing  Like you say, it’s tidier…once it’s tidied up!

Is it worth getting or can you get an hdmi wall socket? A bit like keystone network jacks, but a hdmi one? Also, I wonder if there’s a USB version of that too!?!

Thanks @diizzy , so it only starts being a problem if gaming? I’m only starting off thinking of sending her monitor to downstairs, so she can make noise AWAY from my bedroom!

I’d say anything else than for presentation depending on how sensitive you are.
This is old by now but just to give you an idea what to except in worst case.

That certainly looks great, especially the price! Though I have to say, it’s technically well above my pay grade  Thank you all the same!

You absolutely can

As always, it all depends on the model and price…
But it’s not a cheap solution… The price rises quickly with the parameters.

With such a short distance, I would probably personally decide for two dedicated cables and that’s it.

Since the distance is not long and if 5-10m of cable is enough, maybe start with something simple… Two cables, one DP and the other USB. For this also a DP to HDMI converter and a USB hub.

And you’ve got the kit ready. Super cheap won’t be but much cheaper than with cat/eth.

USB

DP

DisplayPort to HDMI

These are just casual examples… not recommendations.
