I am using ownCloud and so far it has worked fine installed on my shared web hosting package. It's not really suitable for image sharing though. Are there similar software packages to ownCloud for image sharing? Maybe it's better to just use public tools? Any good ones? What are some advantages of any given option? What do you guys use and why?
I am using Lightroom in a windows VM as there seems to be nothing even close to it for Linux. Whatever the sharing tool/platform it would be nice if it could integrate with Lightroom publishing. I plant on either hosting it on a shared web hosting package (local machine not reliable enough) or perhaps using public service.
Not sure about mediagoblin yet will need to look at some more real world examples and see how it feels.
Dark table feels limited in comparison. Will try it a bit more but I doubt it can handle panorama striching as well as Lightroom. There's also some times that Photoshop is needed and there's really nothing with some of the more advanced features that exists for linux. The integration with lightroom isn't really required, simply exporting images as files works just fine to be honest.
My suggestion if dark table is missing a feature or isn't performing as well as it could would be to submit a feature request or bug/enhancement to them. It will then at least be on their radar.
I've heard good things about mediagoblin, I think it's not the simplest to set up (but haven't looked in a while). Definitely worth evaluating, though maybe it's to much for your needs?
Will be giving darktable more of a chance as I gave up on it before as it felt very un-intuitive and annoying to accomplish even simple tasks. I haven't discovered specific missing features yet though I doubt raw and panorama support can be as good. It kind of feels like a cheap Lightroom knock off, not nearly as pleasant to use overall so far.
I am not sure anymore what I actually need/want now, any videos I would probably use youtube anyways, so media goblin may be too much indeed. I could also just use a wordpress plugin to create galleries but that would be tied to the site more than self-hosted standalone web app. Kind of leaning toward Google photos now for it's simplicity. Not sure about Flickr as it's M$ now...
