Hi Guys,
I did a quick search on these here forums but had no luck so decided to ask myself. Links to relevant data is much appreciated.
I'm building a new gaming PC. I have a samsung 840 series 120GB SSD to use for the OS (windows 8) and two 500GB HHDs (one for general data and the other for Fraps footage). My question to you is how to get these three drives set up in such a way as to Have the OS on the ssd (along with frequently used programs and games), my documents and all the gubbinz that windows writes two and changes often on one of the two HHDs (to avoid over using the ssd, avoiding quantum tunnelling and all the other things that shorten ssd lifespans) and being able to use the third drive as a video repository.
I hope that all made sense to you, and thanks in advance for any help you can give
Ben
i have a similar setup except with one 1.5 tb hdd instead of 2 500gb hdds, wat i did was when i installed the os i only had the ssd plugged in that way it only wrote all the os files to the ssd, after the os was installed i hooked up my hdd and setup my web browser to download to it, put the steam files on it (before they gave u an option of where u wanted the games downloaded).
kinda the same thing with wat your trying to achieve except u just have fraps put footage on your other hdd that isnt the games one, basically put the os on the ssd and whenever a program gives u an option to download somewhere else have it download onto the hdd. i have the os and a few other programs on my 120gb ssd and i have about 50gb of space still, though my hdd is starting to get a little fulll hmmm. welp anyway hopes this helps u
Awesome stuff, thanks for your reply. That seems like a good plan to me. How long have you had you ssd in your system? I've heard they die quickly with too much writing and re-writing. Any ideas on how to move everything i can access as a user off the ssd onto one of my hdds?
Sorry if I dont make sense, it's 1:30 in the morning :P
Thanks again
personally i've had my ssd for almost a year (got it brand new) i havent noticed it slowing down to much, not really sure what u r asking with the second point. i just stick everything except the os and some programs that i use often (chrome, divvy, skype, etc) on the hdd and i put program shortcuts on my desktop which lets me access them without having to go into the drive
Thanks again. What I tried to get across in my late night delusional ramblings was that I heard It's a good idea to move certain folders off the SSD because they change so often they can shorten its life. Things like the appdata folder. I was hoping for some info on that as well.
either way a ssd has a longer life span then a hdd so i would just leave them on the ssd even though they change often. if u put those folders on the hdd it will shorten its lifespan,
Righty ho. Thanks for your advice
