Setting up my first ever server, looking for advice

Greetings comrades, I am new to the Tek Syndicate forums and have decided to give it a try.

About two weeks ago I started trying to get into Linux, starting with ubuntu. I then began to think about something useful for my entire family that I can do with Linux and decided a server that backs up the data on the computers on the Network would be nice. My mother is a Lawyer so if she ever has a hard drive crash she is required by law to retrieve that data somehow, which usually costs her money she does not have at the time.

I do not know what hardware to get or how to use it to accomplish the task at hand. I am open to all advice that you may be willing to give. The main trouble I am going to have is the software side being that I am new to Linux.

I was thinking there might be a way to backup the data over the network using a combination of homegroups and virtual box, but I truly cannot say I know.

Lastly I would not mind having the server be around to host some games, but the data backup is first priority.

Tell me what I have done wrong, Jonathan

If backup is your main priority, I would suggest a FreeNAS installation. You don't need much Linux experience for it, it is very customizable and has build in tools to keep your and your mom's data safe (somehow "your mom's data" sounds like a joke or insult... I think, I'm twelve). That said, I'm only really trying to get into Linux myself, so there might be an all-round solution I'm missing, BUT if the data is important, use a dedicated system for backups and for the love of [e.g. deity] keep it away from the Internet and especially game servers. Real backups are way too important to risk them by putting them on a games-downloads-VPN-backup-server. Just my two cents as a SysAdmin.

Oh, and welcome to Tek Syndicate.

I'd agree with FreeNas or Nas4Free (a derivative of FreeNas) would be a good place to start for a Nas device to host your data. Both OS's are really flexible and allow any data to be shared on the network. In terms of data backup I've used a program called DirSync which is coded in Java. It's a file syncing program that allows me to specifically back up certain files and folders when I want. You can set it up on a schedule as well to be more automated.
