Server no workie

I have a headless 18.04.02 server. Things that worked before but don’t now are;

  1. ssh - had pub/priv key setup for old desktop can’t undo to new machine
  2. smb shares - no visibility on network (windorks or linux)
  3. qbittorrent-nox - no login at 8080

Whole thing went sideways at once a month+ ago. I have only tried to revive ssh at this time but with no luck.

Check syslogs?

Check disk to make sure there’s no corruption?

Verify package integrity?

You’re not really giving much to go off of.

I don’t know what happened and don’t know how to articulated it any better? Whenever i try to connect through ssh it just times out.

Based on what you’re saying, its time to stick a head on it and see whats on there. If you know the IP is right then theres not much else to do.

Have you tried turning it off and then back on?

Several

have you tried to nmap it to make sure its actually booting and the ports are available?

I know it’s booting because its on the otherside of the room. I will check the ports, but I don’t tinker with them. I assumed those were unchanged.

The only thing i do to the server is update/upgrade

how do you know its booting if you have no monitor and its not responding to any services?

I painfully swap with my desktop tower & it pops up on the router ok with an IP

so you hooked up a monitor to it and verified it boots, did you verify the services you want are running?

yup ssh & smbd

If you don’t want to stick a graphics card in it, your motherboard almost surely has a serial port and ubuntu has an agetty process listening on /dev/ttyS0 by default.

are you using ufw?

ummmmmm, don’t know

onboard graphix

What is topping you from plugging a monitor into it then?

don’t want to put one on it fulltime.

fulltime? I thought you were trying to troubleshoot ssh access?
