Server for homelab

Hello I'm looking to build a server for a home lab for learning and fun. Have no real idea on what software I'm going to be running. Probably ESXi. Going to want to implement Win Server 2012 for active directory and some Linux to learn the OS better. This will also be used as my media server for my home.

I have put together a rough parts list and would appreciate any input. This is to be added to when the $ permts.

Uh, why not use the AMD 8350?

Looking at your parts list that's everything but a server build to me. It's more like a gaming build without a video card. No need for 750W of power, too.

PCPartPicker doesn't have the proper stuff listed, so I'm going to do it the old-fashioned way.
You can go different directions with this, really depends on the power you need.

One possibility is to us an SoC-Board like the Supermicro X10SBA. It costs around 200$ and has a quad-core 4x 2Ghz Celeron on it. It also supports 6Gb/s SATA Raid 0,1,5,10, ECC memory and the CPU has TDP of only 10W. Combine it with a couple of harddrives and 16GB of memory and you are good to go.

You can also go with the octa-core Atom on the AsRock-Board that Wendell made a video about a while back.

ESXi would be very gimped on a "K" series part it doesn't have VTd (hardware pass-through).

A cheap Xeon or an non "K" i7 would be better (you never want to overclock a server anyway).

I would suggest using Virt-Manager on Linux over ESXI because it is easier. And you would have access to three different VM technologies: XEN, KVM and LXC. XEN is what Citrix uses and KVM is what Openstack uses as it's main hypervisor.

Heres One I put my spin on it and went over budget
