So I currently have the 2011 edition wireless A40 edition but as their newer headsets are as horrible as their support, I’m swapping to Sennheiser. Headset is a must for me as I talk to friends daily. Headphones with added mic would work too I suppose. So recommendations always welcome! My actual question is if I got this headset, it’s 50 ohms, would it be worth getting the ODAC? Thanks in advance guys and gals!
If you mean the o2 oDac / Amp yes it is worth getting one if you plan on getting other headphones in the future. As always it is a question of budget.
And instead of a headset try good headphones with a mic for around $20. That should give you better sound quality for your money.
I highly recommend watching the "gaming headsets suck" series with logan and tyler from mayflower electronics.
Thanks for the reply as always, I would love a really nice pair of cans and would be okay with a secondary mic like the Mod Mic 4.0, it looks nice. Barnacules has a good review of the headset I linked, just the closed version which is 150 ohms instead of 50 ohms. MMX 300's also look nice. Just can't decide what I should get at this point. Thanks for the input though!
Word of advice. Never EVER EEEEEVVVVEEERRR listen to barnacules about anything audio.
The guy is horribly inexperienced with audio and really should not be doing reviews on audio products at all until he gains more experience.
If you are looking for sheer gaming performance, then I would highly recommend the AKG Q701s and a mod mic with the o2 amp and dac.
You will have a much MUCH better experience.
If you are looking for gaming performance but you need a closed back headphone, then the audio technica ath-a900x are great and you would probably do well with buying a creative sound blaster Z sound card.
If you are looking for gaming and music, then I would start hunting down a used pair of sennheiser HD600s
if you are not ok with used, then look for sennheiser 558 headphones on sale or something.
Thanks for the tip. To be quite honesty, I'm not sure how I'd like closed back headphones because I've never owned any. I know it just blocks out more background noise and from what I've seen, they "typically" seem to be higher ohms, at least the one's I've looked at. I've watched Tek's review on the Mod Mic 4.0 and I think it sounds fantastic and I would be fine with that mic. I would rather have the o2 ODAC+Amp than a sound card. My favorite set just by watching reviews so far are the DT 990s. The DT880s look amazing but I want a slightly bassy set of cans so I'll keep looking around.
Mmmmmmmmmm well here is the thing.
If you are looking for a good balance between gaming and music, the AKGs are pretty much it.
For music, the HD600s or the DTXXXs are nice, but they sacrifice a lot of gaming performance.
as for closed vs open, closed headphones sound worse (less natural) but they block out noise from your environment and they also keep noise from leaking out.
So if you are in a dorm with a room mate, get closed back.
If you are home alone, get open back.
I use AKG K702/ mod mic combo with O2 amp/dac as my go to desktop headphones and mic. The open sound stage of the AKG's really makes a difference when playing games. They did take while to break in though. They didn't have very much bass when I first got them back in October of last year but the drivers have broken in a little more now and the bass is more present. The sound quality is as good as a much more expensive pair of cans. I also have a pair of Beyerdynamic T 70 250ohm but I usually stick with AKG's even though the T 70's cost almost twice as much as the AKG's. I use the T 70's when I travel though. They are closed back and have a higher build quality than the AKG's.
I just need to find a nice shop nearby where I can listen to several and get a feel for them to see which I prefer. Not wanting to spend more than $200 on cans but a little more would be okay. I listen to rock and rap mostly with a side of wub wub so interpret that as you wish. I do a lot of gaming but not too many shooters. One's I'm looking at currently online at least that I'll have to find somewhere to try most or all of them nearby, so far are:Sennheiser-HD 598's andHD 558's, Beyerdynamic DT990's (Premium or pro, not sure yet), or lastly, the Mayflower Electronics modded Fostex TR50P's, not sure which version yet.
Agreed. The AKGs have epic soundstage, while the HD600s do not.
