It's been at least a decade since my last PC build, and since then I've been stuck with laptop after laptop for work. I'm looking to build a rig specifically for gaming and as a backup work PC (I don't think I'll need a l33t build to run Excel, Skype, and TOR). I've really only been part-picking in-person back in the States, so I'm out of it when it comes to reputable places online. I'm not gonna be super-nit-picky when it comes to wants, but do have a few "needs."
- Quiet - due to an echo-chamber of a place I live in, while simultaneously having thin walls.
- Great for gaming - I currently play Firefall on my laptop with everything cranked to Low. This must end.
- Wifi! - Not paying 100Q extra on my rent to have internet I can't use.
- Minimum 500GB Harddrive - It's the size in my laptop and I've used ~ 200GB thus far in the 3 years.
- More than 2 USB ports - Mouse takes 1, headphones take the other. It sucks.
The only parts I've really taken the time to look at are the Fractal Designs Define R5 case for its legendary quietness and a couple of NVIDIA 970 cards. I know 4GB is what I'd like, but that's really as far as I've dug. Hopefully the fine folk here can help a geezer out!
EDIT: Probably should mention I'm currently in Guatemala but can get parts from the US. Budget I'd like to float around $1000-$1500, but don't have a qualm for going above.
Where are you buying parts from (region)? I'm assuming the UK but I need to know for sure. What is your budget? What games. other than Firefall, do you pay and at what resolutions?
budget?
something like this ~ http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4DtJQ7 - i5, gtx970, 8gb ram, matx mb & case, great psu, wifi, win 8.1, 250gb ssd, 2tb hdd
Firefall is pretty much the only thing I've been playing as of late, but got Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel to run with some extensive back-of-house modding to prevent laptop melting. I'd love to play through the Witcher trilogy, but I'm not expecting to be able to run Witcher 3 on Ultra with my $1000-1500 budget. My laptop only goes up to 1366x768, which I know isn't all that impressive. I've been kinda "out" of PC gaming due to the laptop issue
Not a bad build. I went back to edit my post stating $1000-$1500 budget, and this is right below that (which isn't a bad thing.)
With that budget you could go for a 980. Do you need an OS, peripherals? Would you be wanting to try overclocking?
If you don't need OS, peripherals etc. in that budget, and want to overclock: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/QzFtFT
That's a 4690K with an NH-D15, 8GB of 1866MHz RAM, a GTX 980, a 240GB SSD, 1TB HDD and a fully modular 750W PSU in a fractal R5.
What resolution are you gaming at?
Do you also need a monitor, mouse, keyboard, audio set up?
You'd probably just want to go with an i5+R9 290 depending on sales. Throw in something like the R5 with something like the coolermaster Silencio 240M and you should be golden, Then just get a platinum rated power supply or some specific gold ones, not sure what else could be done
You mean the nepton 240m?
Ya that one I guess http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103201
Silencio is the name of the fans and of a case of theirs right? I wonder if it's more silent than the R5.
thin walls and echo chamber ehh
I'd suggest about 50~100$ to sound proofing your room with something like this
