Self Contained Darknet?

Not really sure if this is the correct sub-forum for this but I just learned about something that I view as super cool, and I am bummed it seemingly hasn't had work done on it in a while.

Basically it is a self contained darknet built on a small cheap usb router and WRT.

The other day I was looking up something John McAfee had said years ago called D-Central which was going to be a device with like a 1 mile range that people could use to set up a private network. Anyways...I found he did not make it. But found that there was basically the same thing but was open source and had less range.

Has anyone heard about this before? Because I think this is so awesome.

Something like that would honestly get more attention than the normal internet.

In terms of if people were using it to remain hidden?
I agree, this would get a lot of attention if used for illegal purposes.

I mean I find this cool from a technology standpoint.

A WAN, is 2 more more LAN's connected together. I.E the internet as we know it.

You can have a fully sustained network without connecting to the internet.

I didn't read what you linked because I'm short on time at the moment, but from what it sounds like it just creates a separate network and then bridges into the current network.

That is not what this does, It's more like a separate LAN for all of the people connected to it, but you wont have access to the normal internet.

The device has a website hosted on the USB plugged into it so anyone connecting to the device can access it. So all the traffic on the network this devices is only between the people connected to it.

Have a look at what they do in Cuba with Streetnet(?), and there is also the Piratebox.

IMO if you wanted to experiment with this kind of thing try a Pi or similar rather than a router at first.

So a mesh intranet?

More or less yes, I think mesh is a good name for it.

@Buckshee Thanks I will look into those.

at first I read INTERnet.. I'll call mine Netto (Net + Ghetto, also Swedish for value, or is that just the shop's line?)

The occupy stuff was heading in a good direction, a bit like PMR via internet relays.

I think that hardware has moved on enough to extend the piratebox idea, rather than a router running basic message boards there's a ton of SBCs that could run more featured stuff, Diaspora like stuff between nodes? Allowing forwarding out of your network is a choice after all. It all sort of fits together into something cool that's not much like what the Markets want us to have.

Yeah I have been reading the PirateBox info and it is what I think the idea needs to be. The next step is to have PB move onto mesh networking and not have it be experimental mode.
I would set up a PB node to be part of a Mesh in a heartbeat if I knew there were nodes around me that I could add to.
