Security cameras, that do not need cloud

The nice part about using Frigate or other software that is not tied to one camera vendor is that you can mix and match. I have used a bunch of different brands and models over the years. I still have a Linksys WVC54GCA from 2008 going strong.

You should get multiple angles of areas with high importance. Not once have I wished for less views of something. More then once, a camera had failed or even just moved by an animal, then something happened that night and I really needed that cameras view.

I have network distribution points around the property and house. A metal box that contains a POE switch or an POE extender. If I need to add a camera, I can do so without it being a major effort. Currently at 32 cameras and would like to add more.

I ordered: “Reolink P324“, “Dahua IPC-HFW1639TC-A-IL-0280B-S6“, and “TP-Link TL-SF1008LP“ as a first test.

After a bit of painful setup (especially for the Dahua camera) I can see them in the Home Assistant, but I was not yet able to set up frigate.

I hope I did all previous steps correctly, and I am at Home Assistant Integration | Frigate
What config file it is? /homeassistant/configuration.yaml? /homeassistant/custom_components/frigate/services.yaml?

Frigate is set up, and I am now choosing which cameras to use for the primary outside zones.

I am waiting for prices, but from random shops online got it to these options:

IPC-HDW3849H-AS-PV-0280B-PRO: 8Mpx, dual led, <= 10W (probably black)
IPC-HDW2849T-S-0280B-PRO: 8Mpx, only white LED, <= 6.4 W (no black option) (may be most expensive)
IPC-HDW3649H-AS-PV-0280B-PRO: 6Mpx, dual led, <= 10W (probably black)
IPC-HDW2649T-S-0280B-PRO: 6Mpx, only white LED, <= 6.4 W (no black option) (may be cheapest)

I build this list based on availability in local (online) stores, unfortunately price is not listed, so I will need to ask. Before I started searching for price on random sources, I did have 2 more higher end 8Mpx models, but found out, that the price is likely about 4x (3x) the IPC-HDW2849T-S-0280B-PRO.

All of them have 1/1.8" CMOS, which seems like largest option available.

What do you think about this list? Do you think some option might be missing? (Even if because I did not find it in local eshop.) Can be from another brand.

Yank a flock off it’s pole, stick it in a Faraday cage and try jailbreaking that. Even if you fail you’d still be doing society a favor.

For legal purposes, I’m not actually suggesting/promoting theft… but I personally wouldn’t judge anyone who did this either.

I think I am lucky enough that closest flock cameras in use might be 1000s km away. But I seen some news, so I get why people do not like them. (To put it nicely.)

I have interesting pricing option, IPC-HDW2849T-S-0280B-PRO is half of the other 8Mpx one, and almost same as IPC-HDW2649T-S-0280B-PRO (not even 2% difference), so unless someone points out some issue with it, I will buy IPC-HDW2849T-S-0280B-PRO as the main perimeter cameras.

The 2nd number position indicates the sensor resolution, 6=6MP and 8=8MP.
So you selected the correct, still you probably want to read on before deciding to buy it.
Dahua has a naming convention for all it’s products, I’ve included my copy if you want to look something up.
You camera details are on page 2 and 3, but not all pages have the focal length listed, try is page 7 or 13.

As to address your question:

I want be sure you know about Dahuas epic trackrecord in security.
A epic saga of epic exploits and epic impact.
As Dahua security incidents have been some of the biggest and easy exploits, only bested bynHikVision in number of hacked devices.
And it wasn’t just industry leading number of exploit, most of the vulnerable code only needing low skill attack vectors.
I know the hole… I mean whole industry has a plain disregard for security.
But Dahua and Hikvision make the rest rest of the industry look better.

As you already wanted to setup vlans at your home, just copy best practice block all except for video and NTP.

Moving on to my last yapping, Dahua has a major software problem.
But this time it’s the IP camera’s their web GUI and general service tools.
Dadua IP cams firmware is mainly developed for industrial use and configurable is so so mant way a dark hallway look bright on screen, and many other option bands can only dream about.
This can make the cams also quite a challenge sometimes… every install actually because it’s really easy to make the video unwatchable, but trying to get some overexpose tuned and you have to tweak 3 or 4 setting.
I checkt your intended cameras user manual, It has 202 pages of instruction for setting to set.
Also seem to remember unconfigured Dahua IP cams have no DHCP enabled and you have to guess the static one.
Or you need to use the Dahua setup tool which can be a pain get, as Dahua actively hunts sites hosting a copy because they don’t like it they get to less service contract income.
You’ll can probably guess what Dahua want before you can use it.
Luckily I know a IP cam security form you can get it, they have also a S*load of supporting documentation, explanations which focal lengt is the best fov, and so much more almost all stuff is for Dahua and hikvision.
I’ll put the link in new message, as I want to explain whatever if necessary.
Oh almost the login screen with the most stupid feature ever.
The web GUI will ask a very bad question, It wants you to install a browser plugin from the cam it’s memory.
Because for some reason they are to spiteful to use hrml5 for video steaming.
The one solace you only need to do this once (hopefully), as the only reason you to log in.
Is to configure and enable video out to Frigget, and forget to remove the video file.

So uhh, that might sound like a lot, but after install you never have to touche it again.
If you can manage the security on your home network, it’s more annoyance then dealbeakes maybe.

Oh and I think Reolik is a good alternative, if you know the right model. Oh and so far they have had only small security incidents and way better software.
As for the cloud connectivity same story as the Dahua, trust no camera vendor on a non secure vlan.
And for the best camera as in properly vetted software, no backdoors installed en very good sensors go to Ubiquiti security fir you have to plug in a cable and Ubiquiti mange app pairs it.
But you’ll pay quite some more as it’s know to kost.

Oh I also found a functioning camera calculator, I’s primarily used to lay out a virtual camera system on google maps to check is you have all angles covered.
And the best part is, it has a list of just about all cam models and changes the FOV and wat not so you can get a impression which les to get.
There used to be multiple for those tools to use, until they start being bought out and ask 100s of euro’s a month.
This is the tool, JVSG Online
It’s a bit of looking what does what, to change a camera model the menu is bottom right new stuff left.
I checked you camera with both lens variants, they have everything the same except the lens

As for the other documents have a look at this page and the wiki.
I page I linked is a mega mind dump collection of some users which did some very exensite testing. https://ipcamtalk.com/wiki/ip-cam-talk-cliff-notes/
Oh almost forgot they have reviews of Dahua ip cams and explain what model to skip.
As some have a mediocre lens or only a few meters infrared illuminating for night, while you need 30-40m minimum sometimes.

Sorry for the long rant, but I hope have to gain from it.
I’ll go bother you on the 2nd post now

Oh thank you for detailed answer, I know the spec of the Dahua cameras I put to the final list, I am going to buy it trough a person working in official retailer, that is why I did not get the price from the website, and should probably not share exact details.

I know the model I picked have only white led (no IR), but I already got 3 cameras for testing, including Dahua DH-IPC-HFW1639TC-A-IL, and it is just behind Reolink’s P324, while both leading by a lot HiLook’s IPC-T280HA-LU.

No “normal” shop (that would sell directly to the end users) around offers better than 1/2.7" CMOS.

The final selection of 4 was based on specs and price from random “suspicious” stores, to get an idea of their relative pricing. When I got the actual pricing I was quite confused why the personalized pricing in that store have so big discount on IPC-HDW2849T-S-0280B-PRO, and I even asked to check the pricing of the higher model with 4 dual IR+white LEDs, but lets say ~40% discount would be better, and still not make it more interesting.

The DH-IPC-HFW1639TC-A-IL I bough for testing have all the configuration issues you listed, so I am ready for it (apart from the VLAN setup, but that is on my list to learn hopefully this year).

I can not get 1/1.8" CMOS from any shop, that sells to end users and does not look suspicious. So having such option is an improvement, and the pricing makes it hard to go with IPC-HDW3649H-AS-PV-0280B-PRO, or IPC-HDW3849H-AS-PV-0280B-PRO, because they are over twice as expensive, and the only advantage for me would be the dual LED having IR. And with 0.0004 [email protected] I just do not think it is necessary.
I need less than 30m of vision on these.

And you do not need to be sorry for 2 posts, it was not that long, and full of useful information.
