Hi, There’s a lot of info on the web and I can’t seem to parse it all out. Just want to dual-boot Win10 and Linux Mint 17.3 64. So I’m at the point where I’ve shrunk C: and now I’m booting Linux from a newly burned CD, did sha264 test and it checks for the iso. It’s on a Toshiba laptop with UEFI and Secure Boot enabled. I was hoping the the Linux would pass muster but it says: “Boot failure, a proper digital signature was not found. One of the files on the selected boot devices was rejected by the Secure Boot feature.”
I could disable Secure Boot and I assume it would probably allow me to install(?) But I thought Linux has a “proper” digital signature these days. Is there a way to install with Secure Boot that is not too mind numbing? Thought it’d be seamless…Thanks
Disabling secure boots works but consider getting a second drive just for linux. It is a bit masochistic to duel boot from the same drive. Wendell reference
I believe Ubuntu has a secure boot signature while Mint does not, so you can try that. I suggest turning secure boot off if you can though.
Is there an actual reason to leave secure boot enabled?
The theory behind secure boot is to stop malicious software from running on your system during boot, but realistically this is likely never going to be a problem for you, especially if you validate your ISOs.
Besides that only a few OSs, primarily Windows play nice with it.
In summary Secure Boot is more trouble than it’s worth, and yes you should turn it off if you want to run unsigned Linux Distros.
OK, simple then, I’ll turn-off secure boot. In theory I like the idea of another layer of security, but seems like , it’s limiting freedom of choice of distros.
On another note I hope grub will “know” how/where to install(?)
Thanks
Linux Mint and Ubuntu will both install grub for you, this goes for most Linux distros that have an installer.
You’re welcome.
This is the vibe I felt but had never heard explicitly stated. Good to know. Thanks!
Thanks for the help. Just one concern (ie. confusing me), maybe I should start a new thread…will start a new thread I guess. Again thanks!
