Sapphire R9 290X 4GB TRI-X vs Sapphire R9 290 VAPOR-X 4GB vs Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 4GB vs Gigabyte GTX 970 XTREME 4GB

Which of these 4 graphics card is the best for 1080p and 1440p? Which of these graphics cards is the most powerful enough to run The Witcher 3, Far Cry 4, Fallout 4, or GTA V at 1080p 60fps and 1440p above 30fps? Which of these graphics cards would you guys buy? BTW I want to upgrade my current graphics card the MSI R9 280X Twin Frozr 3GB.

The r9 29 Vapor X is the best choice but it's best to wait until the 400 series comes out because that class of GPU will cost around $200 flat. In terms of Performance, these are all 1400p class gpus definitely able to achieve 1440 60+ easily.

How much are you willing to spend exactly?

i think that the Gigabyte GTX970 G1 gaming might be the best of the bunge.
Allthough the Sapphire 290X triX wouldnt be bad either.
But then i would say look for a Sapphire 390 Nitro OC instead of a 290 (x)

where are you planning on getting a 290X from, used?

If new, I just checked current retailer prices (assuming you're in the US) and it would make more sense to step up to an R9 390 over the 970 or 290X

I have the Sapphire 290 and play at 2048x1536 or about a half million pixels short of 1440 and for GTA V it runs like a champ. I don't have the other 3 games but short of Game works stepping in to ruin everyone's Kiev just a little more than it all ready is you should be fine.

I would say look at the 390s because 8gb and slightly newer. Unless you are short on cash. Then the 290 all the way.

Out of them the Vapour X is the best cooling.

I would take the 970 when choosing between these four, but I would recommend going for a 390 instead, costs pretty much the same + 8gb of vram

sap 290x vapor-x 8gb is your best bet or 390x.

I think the Sapphire VAPOR-X R9 290 4GB is a huge upgrade from the MSI R9 280X Twin Frozr 3GB. Take a look at this video. The Sapphire Vapor X R9 290 4GB completely blows the R9 280X (7970) out the water. MisteryAngel, Now do you think the Sapphire Vapor X R9 290 4GB is a huge upgrade from the MSI R9 280X twin frozr 3gb? Is the Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 4GB a huge upgrade from the MSI R9 280X Twin Frozr 3GB? The Sapphire VAPOR-X R9 290 4GB and Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 4GB should be huge upgrades from R9 280X and should play higher frame rates at 1440p than R9 280X.

The 970's are out of the picture the 3.5 of fast ram and .5 of slow ram makes it undesirable for 1440p. If on a tight budget look for a sapphire 290 tri x OC ( some people have been lucky and unlocked them to a full 290x)

If not on a super tight budget a sapphire 390/390 (x) with backplate is what I would go with, The vapor-x is a good model if not the best cooling for the 290s . No matter what you decide a 290 290x or even a 390 you can't go wrong.

Considering you already have a 280x, I would recommend you wait for Nvidia and AMD to update their graphics cards in the coming months and then buy. You'd be getting a 10% performance bump for $300, where as you will get a lot more then that for your $300 in a couple months. And considering you current card is by no means a slouch, its probably worth the wait.

In Crysis 3 comparing MSI R9 280X Twin Frozr 3GB. and Sapphire R9 290 Vapor X 4GB, the R9 290 got 10 fps higher at 1440p very high settings. There is a huge performance bump for the R9 290.

That is horrible value for the money your paying. If you wait a couple months you might get 30, or even 40 fps at the same price point.

So I should wait a couple months? I might get 30fps or 40fps higher at 1440p Max Settings. But yet again, the new cards that will come out will be mad expensive. I think I should go with the Sapphire R9 290 Vapor X 4GB because it is a great card for 1440p 60fps max settings.

What I'm saying is, the gains you would get right now from moving from a 280X to a 290 is not damn near worth your money. If you turn down settings from Ultra to High for a couple months and then spend your $300 on the R9 480 or Gtx 1070, you would get a lot more for your money then if you spent $300 now on a 290 or a 970. Think about it this way, the Gtx 780 ti was the fastest card on the planet and costed $700 when it came out. When the Gtx 900 series came out, the Gtx 970, for half the price at $300, performed about just as well as the Gtx 780 Ti, which was still selling for $700. And with promises of HBM2 and a die shrink, we might get even more that performance jump for the money. You're really not buying in at a good time if you go out and spend your $300 today.

The next 6 months is a bad time to buy any GPU. Once AMD releases there next generation of cards it will be the best time to buy. You can go new generation for same prices as you have now, or this current generation for a lot less and get more for your money.

In all honesty I am waiting for the next generation my self then I plan on going to 4K or tri 1440p ultra wide setup. This depends on if the new cards can drive 4K at 60+ FPS if not I'll hold on to what I have and wait for the generation after this one.
