Sapphire R9 290 (stock not tri-X or X) for 1440p?

Hello,

I currently have a GeForce 760 TwinFrozr edition GPU with 2GB of GDDR5.
I was wondering, since my 1440p monitor is coming this Tuesday whether an r9 290 stock 4gb would be a good choice and would be able to run some heavy games at that resolution. I can get it for 216 dollars 2nd hand, would that be a good price?

Thanks in advance

I've ran Battlefield 4 very well at 1440p with my R9-290. Some newer games can be more taxing, but there are options to tweak anyhow. Something to remember about the stock R9-290 cards using a single centrifugal fan is that they will be very loud when the card is pushed. Using some tweaking software can help a lot to keep the noise down during lighter loads, by setting a custom fan curve. But high load will remain very loud.

you are going to be very disapointed if you go with one of the stock r9 290's

they wont be able to sustain high clocks (900MHZ OR ABOVE) without the fan being pushed to extremely loud levels.

+1 , get a second hand / new after market R9 290 , like a trix

Unfortunately the options are very limited in my country. Is the loudness of the fan the only issue? There are currently no 2nd hand video cards for this price that arent r9 290 (with the exception of other 2gb cards but i want 4gb)

Yea, it gets extremely loud. You can pump up the reference (stock) cooler fan with something like MSI Afterburner to cool the GPU fine, but it's going to sound like a jet engine in your case. If you're okay with that, go for it.

Or I could get a 760 Windforce OC 4GB

In reality you could just lower some settings and play with your 760 for now. Just save up and wait for the 960 or 3xx series from AMD.

I can trade in the 760 for the 290 for just 20 euros extra.. Would that make it a good deal or would you still advice waiting?

Cause i have a max budget of about 200-220 euros for a GPU

I had one of those 290s for mining; it actually sounded like a hair dryer running on medium.

Im starting to get some serious doubts. However, how big of an improvement would it be over an 760 TwinFrozr 2GB?

a little under double the FPS .

Where do you live ? If you count in euros , you should be able to order from where I am ; france , germany or belgium , R9 290's go for about 180-220€ .

If you can trade up for only 20€ extra , DO IT , you can add an aftermarket cooler with the remaining budget .

(I'm a bit of a noob.. What is an aftermarket cooler?)

And where can i get one for the 290 :D

Also, thanks a lot for all of your speedy replies everyone, this is one of the best forums ive ever been to..

I live in the Netherlands by the way.

Ok , there are a few options if you want an aftermarket cooler .

-Water cooling ( not the best )

-Air cooling .

Have you decided to trade up ?

If so , you can slap this after market cooler on there and be happy :

Now , it comes with VRM coolers , but if you want , I have one of these , it's just for the VRM's , but there is no real need to cool the vram .

What I have : http://www.gelidsolutions.com/products/index.php?lid=1&cid=13&id=108

It's just for the VRM's that generate the most heat .

You can also just look on ebay for a 290 if you want to , but I do think the trading up is the best option .

BTW all I need is your address if you want me to ship the VRM coolers to you .

Also , if you want to get a card new , caseking has a 290 for 230€ http://www.caseking.de/shop/catalog/Christmas-comes-early-this-year-Weihnachtsangebote:_:1134.html

Hey guys,

Update: I might be able to get a tri-x for 170€ (2nd hand) or a trade in for just 35€. Would that be better

Also, could a 700 W 80+ bronze PSU power it?
