Sanity check on wiring an M.2 to dual 2.5gb ethernet adapter

Hey everyone,

In Wendell’s video on off label uses for small formfactor PCs I picked up a couple of those M.2 to 2.5gbe adapters. The ones I got are the Realtek ones though. I was just hoping someone could take a look and sanity check the 8pin headers to make sure I’m plugging them in the right way. They aren’t keyed like the USB internal headers are.

The cable has an arrow on either end, and the PCBs each have an arrow or a dot next to them.

Safe to say I line all of that up and I’m good to go?

I cant say for sure cause I dont know the pinout diagrams, but yes that is how I would read those labels as well.

If you have a network tester you can try that, if it’s wrong flip it, 50/50 shot

No network tester. I’ll line up the arrows and see what happens - I didn’t want to short anything out.

it looks like a straight through, so it should be a pin-to-pin match for RJ45, if you know the pinout for that. The grounds should be stacked over eachother on one side, I think? Looking at the PCB, it seems most likely to be the circles, since the traces off that don’t go straight to the chip, and if I’m reading the diagram right, that lines up with the triangles on the other side, both of which filter through a couple ceramic caps…

If you need further encouragement to line up the triangles with the triangles and circles on either side .-.

Thanks for the help everyone. My mad science is working!
