Samsung GS3 update 4.2

Is this thing ever going to drop? I held out on rooting my phone on the promise that it would be available over the air by the end of november. Has anyone heard anything?

4.2 has never been promised, only 4.1.1, fortunately we have had leaks of 4.1.2 which pretty much confirms that we will be getting it officially in the coming months. sorry to burst your bubble but if you expect Samsung to continue to update our device for more than one your, you are deeply mistaken. If this makes you unhappy, buy a nexus for guaranteed updates or root your phone and flash some roms

Jack

The only 4.2 you can get for the GS3 is in custom ROM's. I have stuck with CyanogenMod for years, personally. However, CM 10.1 (Android 4.2) soft bricked my GS3 twice, so I am sticking with CM10 (Android 4.1.2).

Personally, root your phone, install ClockworkMod Recovery, and flash CM10, GApps, and a custom kernel.

Rumors say 4.1.2 (not 4.2) is coming in february. Otherwise i agree with the samurai, root your phone and install some custom rom, its fun, harmless and you'll get more out of your phone in terms of fluidity, stability, battery life, etc. To start with i would recommend either Omega rom, which already is a 4.1.2 based rom for S2. Works great.

EDIT: SCRATCH THAT. Sorry, i dont know why but i could have sweared the topic said Galaxy "S2" and not S3...  Of course, we're at 4.1.2 for S3 and there is no 4.2 from samsung, not even leaked. A good 4.2 rom based on CM 10.1 (android 4.2) is Cyanway though, made by the guy who makes VikingWay.

We are upto 4.12 in Britain already, I would not say that 4.2 is out of the question

It most likely is out of the question. If you look at Samsung's previous update philosophy they usually don't update any of their devices, even their flagships devices, to the newest Android version. Especially if a new device is around the corner (S4) as they can advertise the new phone with 4.2.

I'd recommend getting a custom ROM nontheless. Samsung usually bloats their phones beyond belief and TouchWiz is in my opinion an abysmal launcher. I flashed a custom ROM with TouchWiz on a Samsung Galaxy S(1) and it performed better and was more smooth than the Galaxy S3 my friend has on stock, not to mention the battery life was boosted by insane amounts which should say something about Samsung's stock ROMs in general.
