Ryzen/Vega laptop PCIe Bus Error

Please read here.

old post

My laptop (Lenovo 720s-13ARR, the Ryzen/Vega8 thing) is amazing … but needs help.

I tried a couple distros but ultimately got my beloved Manjaro running. It is great … until it freezes. And it freezes a lot and I have to hard reset it by holding down power to shut it off.

I am pretty sure it has to do with the wall of PCIe Bus Errors I would get with every boot, I just told grub to shut up about it for now. But it is now at the point where this is the main reason not to use this install full time over my macbook. So I would like to fix it.

I was about to wait for a Manjaro update but … it has been a while. 4.15.0.1 is the newest kernel there is and that is of course what I have running. I don’t want to go into testing branch.

Here is what I get with every boot:

... and so on

So, that is the situation.

Not the best idea to install many modern distrobutions on a brand new laptop…

Anyway:

And that is directly from manjaro?

Built from testing

So, basically you didn’t even read my post.

Great.
Thanks.

Anyone else?

I am on 4.15.3 now.
The good: my trackpad is supported now and basically everything is perfect.
The bad: The freezes are still happening.

Nobody a clue?

Have you reported this elsewhere?
Such as the kernel bug list

First can you find out what device is involved here?

lspci -d 1022:15d3 -vv

I’m assuming it’s still the same device involved here. If it’s changed use something else than 1022:15d3

Then we can continue.

Also @noenken can you have a look into the laptops BIOS (if possible) and list what options are available?

I’m particularly interested in anything related to power management.

Try to photograph or screenshot all menus if it has that feature.

No, I didn’t think it would be that special. In general I assume I’m just being stupid with something or that there is a solution already and I just missed it.

Unfortunately there is very little at all. No submenus even…

Here is the output from lspci:

Wow that UEFI is basic.
Also I advise you remove that first image. It contains your device UUID serial number and OS License Keys and can be used to get a free Windows 10 install

Now obviously you use linux, but you might want to not give those away just yet.

As for the device throwing the PCI-e error.
It appears to be the Standard Hotplug Controller Driver.

Thus I now wonder which device this may actually have to do with.

The module driver:

If you want you can fire an email at Greg Kroah-Hartman with any and all details you can gather and see if he is aware of this.

But I suspect ultimately this isn’t even the issue leading to the freezes. For that we would need someone that can have a look at the PCI subsystem and more for this laptop/Raven Ridge.

Alternatively try Bjorn Helgaas or the open PCI subsystem list as well.

You can try blacklisting the shpchp module which should disable PCI hotplugging and see what happens. I can’t think of anything right now that would need it.

EDIT: Also of interest, what are the intervals at which it logs? journalctl -k

EDIT2: How to report a Linux kernel bug

https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/v4.10/admin-guide/reporting-bugs.html

Also tagging @gnif, do you have any further input?

Also checked for URFI update but there is nothing. And yes, it is a sad joke. I guess ideapad + not Intel isn’t worth the effort. On the other hand it is a new platform sooo …

I bought a new laptop. YAY! I tried a couple distros but ultimately got my beloved Manjaro KDE running when installing from the Architect ISO. It is great … until it freezes. Unfortunately it freezes a lot and I have to hold down power to shut it off.

Since I can leave an Ubuntu 17.10.1 (the only distro that didn’t cry for help on a live stick) running all day long regardless of the PCIe Bus Error, I think it makes sense to also look elsewhere. So, full sitrep:

The Setup

  • Lenovo 720s-13ARR
  • Ryzen 2500U with Vega 8
  • 8GB RAM (not upgradable)
  • Samsung 960 EVO 1TB (upgraded)
  • Intel 8265 wifi / bluetooth (upgraded)

NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
nvme0n1 259:0 0 931,5G 0 disk

├─nvme0n1p2 259:2 0 131,2G 0 part /

└─nvme0n1p4 259:4 0 750G 0 part

The 50GB and 750GB partitions are currently empty.
They were meant for a secondary OS (not sure if I’ll go that route though) and just bulk storage.
I am not using swap at all.

I am running Manjaro KDE 17.1.5 on kernel 4.15.4-2 at the time of this post.
It has been installed to an external drive using the architect ISO.
It was clonezilla’d over to the internal 960 EVO.

Bootup

From hitting enter in grub it goes through

Loading Linux 4.15.4-2-MANJARO x64 ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...

… blanks the screen (nothing unusual up to here) and then goes on with

[ *timecodewhatever*] [Firmware Bug]: AMD-Vi: IOAPIC[5] not in IVRS table

sp5100_tco: I/O adress 0x0cd6 already in use

At this point a hangup can happen and I have to force shutdown by holding down power.
If it doesn’t, it moves on with the PCIe Bus Error messages looping

[ *timecodewhatever*] pcieport 0000:00:01.2: PCIe Bus Error: serverity=Uncorrected (Non-Fatal), type=Transaction Layer, id=000a (Requester ID)

… for about 2x the screen until I get a bunch of [OK] lines and get into the GUI.

I’m not sure if these hangups have gotten worse over time. It feels like it has gotten more and more but it might just be getting more and more annoying.

Running

As mentioned the system freezes a lot while in use and I have to hard reset it by holding down power to shut it off. After a fresh start I have left the system running the same Manjaro install for multiple hours and it was still fine when I came back. I have managed to crash it running a game in minutes. I don’t believe it is temp related since I am playing (well, hardly) Hyper Light Drifter, which should not be taxing on either CPU or GPU.

The USB ports are sometimes just … uhm, turned off. And it isn’t just with drives not being mounted, even input devices aren’t recognized and won’t even get power.

Done so far

In grub I have blacklisted shpchp without any observable (for a noob) effect and sp5100_tco which at least got rid of that one error seemingly without any negative outcome otherwise.

Smart as well as fsck had nothing bad to say about my drive or any partition on it.

I have set pci=noaer to get rid of the wall of PCIe Bus Error messages.

What is next

I will try to get temp readings from the system while pushing it.
I really don’t want to nuke this install but I will try that if I can’t figure out the freezing issue.

And that is it. Sooo …

Wasn’t sure how to do that but I ran mprime -t for an hour, furmark for an hour and right now they are both running for 30 minutes so far. Temps are most likely not the issue, I would also say load on CPU/GPU is most likely not the issue.

I have the feeling it is memory related, maybe the shared VRAM is an unknown thing.

Still don’t want to nuke the system. Pretty sure this is fixable.

Have you run the kill Ryzen script? The cpu might possibly have the marginality error? It’s a 2000 series CPU so I doubt it… Buuuut.

Also disable pcie aspm?

That would suck in a laptop. Most of all for AMD. But I’ll check.

Can’t because UEFI has no options… like none.

Try the kernel pcie_aspm boot param?

I … uh, I totally knew that. …

Will try, thanks.

Tried pcie_aspm=off, game crashed after five minutes.
Also did it with =force just to make sure I tried both ways. Same result.

I built blender-git from the AUR. From experience I can say it is a pretty reliable way to crash with seg fault error on affected CPUs. Worked just fine.

Something new to write about…

I watched WAN show, fresh start, running in chromium with one terminal watching uptime.
35 minutes in screen goes black, audio still playing. No response to any input.
3 minutes later sound stops and everything is dead. I guess that was the buffer running out.

can you try kernel 4.16 staging or 4.17? amd has loads of patches there and I haven’t had a chance to try myself yet. it may be the amd driver has some bugs still.

I would try nomodeset and blacklist the amdgpu driver and stress test from CLI to separate vega issue from cpu issue? just to be sure?
or set it up so you can ssh into it and troubleshoot it. It may not be hung at all and you can see the kernel panic message or whatever is breaking stuff.

I ended up switching to testing branch of Manjaro. So, 4.16rc2 now.
I tried not to but I definitively don’t want to wait another month or so.
The update fixed the freezes on boot, so that is something.
Now testing…

Freezing while playing games and the wall of PCIe Bus Errors is still there unfortunately.
I’ll try the SSH thing tomorrow.

Alright, did the SSH thing and ran dmesg -wH, this is what I get when the laptop freezes:

After that it loops from the INFO line on every 120s a couple times.
Then it lost the connection.

Gonna try again and see if I can do anything in the time between freeze and complete crash.

Yeah, I can look into folders in stuff but I can’t get it to kill the game running or steam or do a controlled shutdown.

Anyone knows something I could try?

Oh, the USB ports being bitchy is also still a thing.

Welp.
That’s definetly a GPU driver code problem.

I want you to try something specific:

  1. Watch a YouTube video, leave it playing in the background.
  2. Then launch the steam client or an OpenGL game.

Should trigger an instant freeze if this is the same bug.
