Ryzen GPU Passthrough Setup Guide: Fedora 26 + Windows Gaming on Linux | Level One Techs

This is secondary CPU? Shut the machine down and from. Fresh power on is this the case? Fury does t support reinit so you can only init it one time per cold boot

Yes this is the secondary gpu. Still no luck after fully powering down back. That’s too bad about the fury, do you know if it will ever support it?

Wild guess, but could the non-support of reinit be responsible for why the vm isn’t producing any output? Could something cause it to initialize despite lspci stating that the kernel is using the vfio driver?

If the display stays dead/black no bios screen you might try a downloaded bios from tech power up and use that instead.

Last time I had this issue, a new vbios solved it.

Success! That was it. I bought my fury x used - turns out the previous owner had loaded a custom bios onto it it which was causing some kind of issue with the passthrough.

Has anyone seen this error before? I’m trying to attach the gpu / sound pci device to my VM through virt-manager. Only recommendation I can find online is to manually overide VCS but isnt that only for bad groupings? My groupings look fine to me (see below)

Actions taken:
remove: spice display
remove: sound
change: firmware = uefi
add pci: device: 0000:21:00:0: "GTX 960"
add pci: device (immediately below gpu): 0000:21:00:1 "NVIDIA Corp"
begin installation

They are definitely bound to VFIO. Proof:

Oh dang, i thought the outputs were the same… it does look like its shared… I only have 2 PCIe 16 slots too… what are the options? only VCS override? Looks like my host GPU is on its own group, can i assign VFIO to that one and pass it through? or does primary slot have to be used for host?

Is this a b350 board?

yes sir, ASUS B350-Plus

Sorry, don’t think it will work well

You dont think i could pass group 11 (primary GPU)?

IOMMU Group 11 22:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GP108 [GeForce GT 1030] [10de:1d01] (rev a1)

Possibly, though you have to tell linux to abandon that gpu and switch to the other gpu at boot, which can be tricky. Worth a try I guess.

The Crosshair Hero VI is probably the best bet from Asus for anyone else reading this — most b350 boards are plagued with iommu group isolation problems. If you get it working though please post back and let us know what you had to do.

well there goes my idea of b350 and ryzen 1600

FYI: I have an ASRock AB350 Pro4, and it has an exclusive group 15 for the primary x16 slot (while group 16 contains (vega 56’s) audio device). So this looks to be on ASUS; either lobby them real hard, or get a b350 board from a different manufacturer, after having someone else check the grouping for you.

My grub is not updating. Using brand new Fedora 26 with ryzen/taichi. My grub command line reads: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=“rd.lvm.lv=fedora/root rd.luks.uuid=luks-5d3d9da5-01ab-4d35-a4f3-b4c4a7151164 rd.lvm.lv=fedora/swap iommu=1 amd_iommu=on rd.driver.pre=vfio-pci” and I have run grub2-mkconfig > /etc/grub2-efi.cfg

At boot, I take a look at the kernel commands my additions don’t appear. Please someone give a man a hint. I’ve been working on this for way too many hours now.

Try ditching the “-efi” in the target. As in “grub2-mkconfig > /etc/grub2.cfg”

After a month of trial and error and CPU hanging at boot time I feel I can contribute a little to newbies such as myself.
If you want to passthrough a gpu there is no problem, the guide works!
Now if you try to passthrough the asmedia sata controller and a USB card -another story altogether.
If you are intending on a build like mine (Asrock X370 Taichi) the graphics cards take up the two top pci slots, cannot use the bottom one or it would disable my nvme drive. That being said the only slot available for a add on pci USB card is the top slot.
The problem is the IOMMU groupings still needs separations. The Asmedia sata controller is in group 13 as is the PCI USB card (chipset Renasas uPD720201).
If anyone has found a way to hack the iommu groupings then that would have to added to the guide. But those who watched the video as I, thought you could follow the guide and get passthrough on more than the GPU, but also the asmedia sata controller, and an add on pci USB card.
I apologize if someone as myself seems uneducated in this matter, but the fact is I am, I want linux as my primary OS and still be able to use windows for VR, games and occasional program that is unavailable on linux.
So far I like what I see in Fedora 26 -very polished, not at all like linux was in the nineties.

QUESTION: any advice for getting Windows to boot or getting the physical disk available for re-install when loading up the DVD windows ISO?

alright so ive made a lot of progress! i can get the VM to start with the isolated GPU. But of course i run into other issues  I have not passed the sata device through vfio, yet. I’m attempting to get it working before passing it.

While DUAL booting, Windows has trouble starting (stop code: INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE) and goes into troubleshoot mode.

  1. tried the repair modes: none have helped
  2. booted into uefi and attempted to boot from file, then point to the /efi//boot/bootx64.efi file <- asks me to “press a button to boot to CD” (see next comment) or just attempts to boot and fails again

I am able to boot from the CDROM (kvm loaded windows.iso), but that only sees the KVM 40GB file drive, not the physical disk, so i cant even re-install the OS…

here is my virt file: win10.xml (note i unmounted the gpu while attempting to resolve this windows boot issue)

edit: i should note, the windows drive boots fine on its own (as the main, host OS)

My other question is about isolating the sata driver. Any tricks for determining which sata device belongs to which drive?
