Ryzen 5950 with Arctic Liquid Cooler 2 360 Core Temps using Prime95

Just a quick question. I ran Prime95 in Blended test mode for about 10 minutes.

My peak temp was about 83 but they bounced 81 between there and 78. Are these good temperatures? Is it safe to try again for an hour? Or is it too high? Is my thermal paste application failing?

Thanks,

Should be fine. My 5950 hits 85 C on Folding@Home which is an AVX2 workload. AMD says 95 is OK.

I would think that is okay, it is not going to live 24/7 at those temperatures right? Even then it should be fine.

83C is fine its when you pass that 92C+ range that its nearing limits. general rule of thumb is 10-20C below max temp is safe for heavy workloads. bouncing off thermal limit not so much.

Thanks for the replies. I feel reassured.

I went back and ran the Prime95 Blended test for an hour. My temperatures were between 55 and 60. But all my cores where pegged at 100% running at 2.9 and 3.0 GHz. So temperature wise it was fine but I think the speed is really slow.

The only overclocking I have is the XMP Profile active. I thought the some of the cores would be up somewhere near 4.0 GHz with the boost. I thought I borked my CPU. But running Time Spy from 3DMark the reports show the CPU hit over 4 GHz with the CPU temperature about 77 C.

I think my thermal setup is fine. But I am confused about how core speeds are assigned.

Can someone please help me understand this behavior?

Thanks!

That is strange. My CPU is running at about 4.5 GHz on all cores while running F@H. I did enable PBO.

I know that one of the boost limits is power in watts as reported by the motherboard. This limit can vary according to things like VRM temperatures. I am wondering too if it pays attention to the CPU AUX power (the four pin connector separate from ATX). Make sure all your power connectors are plugged in solidly on both sides (if using modular PSU). Also check your VRM temperatures if you have sensor reporting for that. You may also need more airflow over your motherboard.

Argh! I did it again. I’m fussing over things when they are fine. That’s what I do. Curse of an Engineer.

I turned on PBO. Dangerously. No limits. I ran prime95 and all cores boosted to 4.9 GHz. My intuition jumped in a bit later that it should have and I shut it down, went back and set PBO to auto.

I ran prime95 again. The cores boosted to 4.9 GHz and but the temps were fine. Although my CPU monitor at one point said I was pulling over 2KW. My power supply is only rated at 850 Watts. Probably a delayed sum effect. But after a few minutes the CPU started to slow but the temperatures stay reasonable. It’s probably how the CPU is meant to work.

So basically I’m just going to assume everything is fine and just play games. I got to stop being a “gotta Max it” guy at home on my fun PC. I’ll of course watch the temperatures when I run my big integration calculations.

It’s hard to let go. Just ask Anakin.
