Rythmbox and ipod

so im using fedora 19 and i have an ipod touch and decided it was time to update my library (had not done that since windows 7). and well i reset my ipod and was using rythmbox to sync my ipod and after it had finished i went to the music library on my ipod and no songs are showing up. is this a problem that happens often or just my dumb luck i even tried it on a second ipod and it had done the same thing. if anyone know what is going on and can help i give you my thanks.

You didn't say what DE you're using, so I assume that it's gtk-based because of rhythmbox.

Fedora 19 with gnome shell uses an application called gMTP to mount MTP volumes connected via USB as if it were a normal drive, and adds some functionality to it all. gMTP is preinstalled in gnome shell, but runs on other gtk3-compatible DE's also, so for instance if you use Fedora with XFCE, you can pull it from the standard repo and use it in standalone mode, it will then actually have some more features than those that are shown in the Gnome GUI, but will start in a separate windows because there is no DE integration.

If your iPod doesn't have MTP support yet, or if it's set to MSC mode, gMTP will not be able to mount the ipod. So if you've reset your ipod, and because of that, an Apple update with MTP compatibility has gone, you just need to redo the apple update. If your device is set to MSC, it will not be recognised automatically because of the proprietary apple format it uses, and you also need a package called ipodlibs, after which it will load as an external drive.

If your ipod doesn't support MTP, and/or you want a standalone all-in-one solution, you can grab the package called gtkpod, which will mount the ipod and allow you to sync to and from it in a GUI.

Rhythmbox will scan for external volumes with multimedia content. As soon as the ipod is mounted, it will show up in rhythmbox, but this doesn't always work very well, rhythmbox is a very basic player.

If you use KDE, Amarok will take care of ipod mounting and stuff automatically.

If you would like a better player for Gnome, install Audacious from the standard repos. It has the same functionality as Amarok and then some, it will load all the necessary libs and deps for instant ipod compatibility, and there are plenty of plugins available to expand functionality, also with ipods. Also it's just a better player than rhythmbox.
