RV870 codenamed "Lil Dragon", 40nm
It's been known for some time that RV870 would be a shrink of RV770. The node following 65/55nm would be 45/40nm, but we weren't sure if AMD would go to 45nm or directly to half-node 40nm. It's now clear that AMD will go directly to 40nm and aim for a performance per watt ratio twice that of RV770. RV870 has been code-named "Lil Dragon", which does indicate that this will be something small, yet something to fear.

The overall performance has been suggested to be somewhere around 20% better than RV770 with a significant drop in power consumption. This points to 960 shaders (192x5), 48 texture units, 24 ROPs and so forth. If this is the case, TDP of the RV870 should be around 150W at most with today's frequencies. This is just an estimate on our part as technical specifications are still hard to come by. We also presume AMD to stay at DirectX 10.1 for now.
Less power consumption, less heat, hrm., one thing comes to mind when i say.. Insane overclocking!

/logan dance

I read that ATI are working on DX11 cards, hopefully they'll use the RV870 or another 40nm chip in it.

Sorry for this dumb question, but do you think they'll get it under 20nm?

Eventually, yeah. Won't be long until they do. Probably in 3 years. Ofcourse I could be wrong. Moores law is unpredictable:)

sounds sexy and expensive

Not at all, the smaller the nm, the cheaper. That's why Nvidia fails with their 600 dollar piece of trash of GPU.

the 280 gpus too expensive but by no means a piece of trash.

Yeah, I know :[ Mine just failed on me. Thats why i called it a piece of trash. My apologies for that unnecessary behavior. Im stuck with my 8600.

Not to mention the power consumption with that thing. It's going to be a while when Nvidia makes their own 40 nm chips.

that sux. you couldnt return it?

no need to apologize, having a card break is a good reason to be upset, i just thought you were saying it isnt good performance wise.

Why olol there!

This sounds so smexy. I want it.
