Routers

Hey Logan I'm getting some slow network speeds for file transfer across my network around 11-12mbps. I think it is my router slowing it down? If so I am wanting to upgrade it. What is a fast router that I could real world speeds get at least 50-60 mbps? thanks

Im going to say it first because everyone here is going to say the same thing, build your own router from scratch or use an old pc as a router to get the best performance.

Are your speeds in Mbps or MBps.

What is your router and your computers link speed to it?

Typical cheaper/older routers typically only have 10/100-Base connections, (10Mbps and 100Mbps) a 100-Base connection will typically transfer at around 11-12 MB of data per second.

If you wish to improve network performance, you need to step up to a router with Gigabit connections or use a Gigabit switch linked into the router. (Connecting any computers to the switch instead)

If your router does have Gigabit ports on it, check that the cables are good (a damaged cable will not run at gigabit or not at all).

You nailed it. I would highly go for a switch that is gigabit. and he is talking about MB/s. 11-12 MB/s would equal 100 Mb/s. MB/s = Megabyte per second and Mb/s is Megabit per second. If you upgrade to gigabit on your home network, make sure you have Gigabit NICs, Cat 5e or higher grade network cable, and Gigabit Router/Switchs. 1000 Mb/s will equal around up to 125 MB/s thru put.

I wouldnt say the same thing, its completley un-necessary. Normal routers work just fine, as long as you dont buy whatever is on the clearance rack at wal mart.

If your router is 10/100/1000 (gigabit) make sure that your cable is at least CAT5E and not just CAT5

(whoops missed it, guy above me beat me to this one)

My router is only 10/100 I guess I need to get a gigabyte switch and maybe some CATE6 cable. Is there any like awesome gigabyte switches on newegg for under $35?

Oh and also would adding a usb ethernet to a laptop help increase speeds? as long as my desktop has gigabit ethernet
