Hi,
Caveat…i am jumping in feet first trying to learn as much as I can.
Could some advise be given to help direct me ?
My project is about having a low power storage device that i can access files movies etc via Wi Fi from my PC ,Tablet or phone and to use open source firmware in my router specifically to give me options and better security.
Currently I have Fixed Wireless Broadband to a TP- link 841 then cat5 to a TP-link 801 access point…works good but want to change firmware to Openwrt.
Plus I have a Rasberry pi I was going to set up as a low power server with a hard drive in a usb case…got half way through setting up using instructions from Internet but had many difficulties and put it aside until i learned some more…im ready to take up the challenge again.
however I came across this on ebay which looks like it is the answer to what i would like to achieve…what are peoples opinions or advice.
On mobile but have you checked whether there is an openwrt for your router?
The pi will serve nicely as a Nas.
Why would you want a new router?
Yea I checked out if openwrt is available for my router which it is....I am not confident with doing some of these software upgrades especially in terminal or githup, ppa etc...to me it isn't easy for me to understand and I have experienced many difficulties at times...however i usually have a go anyway....however for 50 bucks it could save me frustration etc and I can still happily persevere with the pi.
Depends on how easy it is to install the firmware on your current router. Some is as easy as transferring a file and hitting install, while on other devices you need to solder a couple of cables to the inside of the router to be able ot flash with custom firmware. Really depends, found a guide yet?
The lenovo router got a USB 2.0 port, which is the same speeds as you'd get with a RPi. So you could just hook up an external there. However, using the pi will give you more freedom, if you'd like some folders to be accessible for everyone, while having other folders which need credentials. Also sharing to a playstation might be something you want to do, which the pi will enable you to od. Depends on your use case.
Spent ages reading and then changing the firmware to OpenWrt, got it working but next day went to explore some settings and couldn't get a connection again until eventually i couldn't log into OpenWrt.
Anyway put another router in and leaving this one as it is but now have a spare so decided that it is obviously bricked so will replace the flash chip as per youtube search and give it another go....eventually want adblock at the router and will attempt to build a raspi home server and nas like I tried a few months ago...I always have tons of trouble doing this stuff even tho I follow the guides exactly....
Cheers and happy new year.
Cheers, you too! Bummer man. Hope the new one works out. Anything you are having trouble with when setting up the RPi, hit me up I might be able to help. Anything to do with firmware I am sure others here are capable to help if you have a specific problem.
Regarding lan-wide adblocking, have you looked into pi-hole https://pi-hole.net
I have "Soft Bricked" my router (netgear wndr3700 v2) many times running beta builds of ddwrt. I looked and it seems yours may support tftf flashing, which is how I have fixed mine. It may be a bad flash, but could still be recoverable. The power light on the front may be flashing in a pattern that will give you an indication of what it wrong. I have never owned a tp link device so i'm only speculating at this point.

Thanks for your offer 0f help Zumps and the link to Pi-hole...and to enosrevlah for your links, I will follow all avenues.
Cheers.
