At my home we one router, and since our house is pretty big we need to get another one to get the connection throughout the house. Our router we have now is connected to the internet through a cable in the back and not hooked up to a modem. For a new i've been looking and can not find one with this port. Most routers have a cat5 port in the back where I guess the it connect to the modem, which in turn is connected to the cable. Is there any way I can get a router that does not need to be connected to the modem or anyway to avoid it? Or do I need to buy another modem? Any help is greatly appreciated.
try this turning your second router into a Range- Boosting WiFI connection ? Hope it's what you want

I can't do that because it has to go from downstairs to upstairs and it won't reach an extender, so we are trying to set up an independent router.
You dont need a second cable for a repeater it;s a stand alone repeater look at link it explains it all it extands the range of you main router to boost the signal around the house
As in picture explains
In simple terms you connect router 1 to your incoming connection that fires out your wireless signal your second router receives that wireless signal amplifies it and throws it back out for extended range. I have set 1 up before and it works fairly well in the older houses around by me which have trully thick stone walls.
