Router options?

So currently, I'm on fiber broadband, which is only supplied by a coaxial cable. The router supplied by my ISP is (as usual) miserably horrible.

It needs twice daily restarts just to stay operational. Sometimes it's decides to not let anyone use wifi and sometimes it decides to boot everyone off at which point it needs a hard power off to make it right. It's not just this router either, this is our third replacement from our ISP. It's also their brand new improved Technicolor TC7200.

My question is, if I pick up an Asus RT-N66U, plug that into my current router should my woes be resolved? I'd have to use the technicolor as a pass through as the Asus doesn't have a coaxial connection.

PS. I discovered that when the wifi goes down it's a great way to call a family meeting. Everyone flocks to the router.

There are a two routes you can go.

  1.  Put the  ISP provided router into bridge mode where it will act like a dumb modem and let the new router do everything (preferred). You can then use all the features of the new router which are normally better than the ISP one.
  2. You can set up the new router to act as an access point were all it will do is manage the wireless connections.

If you have t mobile they are giving out free Asus AC routers. If not I would go with a Netgear AC nighthawk it looks like they are getting better ratings at the moment. Unless you can find an Asus AC on sale noticeably cheaper than the netgear.

I would make sure the router can work with ddwrt or tomato since they add a bunch of extra functions.

Excellent response, thanks for the reply. This problem unfortunately goes much deeper than I thought. Making a new topic.
