Rock Legend David Bowie has Passed Away

The Irony

David Bowie means alot to me. I didn't start listening to music till I was 14. My sisters listened to Country 24/7 and I hate it with a deep passion (Johnny Cash doesn't count). I was in Best Buy and they had a music cd sampler and one of the artist was David Bowie singing Life on Mars. I was amazed at how much range David Bowie had. The Tune, the message, the lyrics were great. I bought as many of his CD's as I could. He was a great artist. The 90's were a rough patch but I do enjoy alot of his songs. Did you know he performed with Arcade Fire before they were well know, that's how I was introduced to them. David Bowie introduced me to such a wide range of music. I will miss him but I will always enjoy his music.

I'm gutted. It's like a piece of me is gone. I lost a friend, one I never met. He was with me through so many years. This excitement when a new album comes out, experiencing the music in the way he wants me to, as part of his whole vision. This is the last time, he gave us this album to have in this sad time, and it is amazing. To his very end, he created his artistic vision, from the lyrics, to the videos, to the cover art, to the painful, mournful music. The world feels empty now. Lonely.

That is one of my favorite songs to use when inappropriate people won't shutup.

My aunt: did you hear blah blah gossip gossip blah blah your other family member ?

(She knows I know)

Me: Naw I just stopped by to see how so and so was doing.

Aunt: Oh well it turns out blah blah blah

Me halfway through the second blah: Let's DANCE! PUT ON YOUR reD Shoooesand daaance the bluuuues...

Really sucks. I love Bowie, he's one of my favorite artists. He's one of those artists that was truly transcendental, and as widely acclaimed as he is, I think he's still underrated. In debates over who the best singer of all time is, Freddy Mercury would of course receive many mentions, but David Bowie was neglected. I think Bowie was just as good a singer, or even better than Mercury, though.

Another thing that has been seriously underrated about Bowie is The Man Who Sold The World. In discussions about Bowie's best album or albums, TMWSTW is almost never mentioned, but I have a hard time picking a favorite between it, and Low. This is not to even mention phenomenal albums like Hunky Dory, and Ziggy. Furthermore, 1970 marked a huge progression in music; the birth of heavy metal, credited largely to Black Sabbath. But if you listen to TMWSTD, it's just as heavy as any Sabbath record, and actually has a lot more depth. I think it's easily better than any Sabbath record, and David Bowie, and Mick Ronson, don't get the credit they deserve for this album, and that's a god damn shame.

The thing that made Bowie transcendental, was his vast range of music. You think about Black Sabbath, and you think "early metal band." Bowie transcends that though, and can't be put into a box like that. He seamlessly moved between different genres, and was constantly reinventing himself. Folk, Classic Rock, Metal, R&B, Funk, Disco, Electronica, Jazz, Bowie did it all.

He created the glam rock genre
He created probably the most iconic music character of all time; Ziggy Stardust
He brought bisexuality into the light, and stood up for minorities such as Black Americans by calling out MTV in the early 80s for not playing music videos by black musicians. He also brought focus to the racism experienced by Australian Aborigines.

David Bowie is a true legend who inspired and influenced countless people with his music, including me, and his final album, Blackstar, is a fitting swan song.

Live on, Bowie. Live on.

I never listened to anything by David Bowie, but I thought this was interesting.

He was possibly working / going to work with Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett for some part of their new Gorillaz album which is also coming out this year.
