RM850i vrs HX850i

Im really torn between these two psu.

The HX850I and the RM850i
Im building a "Silent" music production/gaming X99 system. I like the RM850i for its advertised "virtually silent operation".

  • MSI X99A SLI Krait
  • 5820K
  • and havent fully decided but im 90% sure a R9 390

Help me try and make my decision!

  • Has anyone had any experience with either unit?
  • Is there something completely left field that I didn't even consider?
  • What's your opinion?

                       Thanks in advance!

Not sure about those, but be-quiet put out some power supplies recently that are well rather silent. Also jump up to 1000W, the less stressed your PSU is, the cooler it'll run

I was debating a 1000W but deemed it overkill, but the silence would be awesome.

It's certainly worth it to make the jump at that price range, a gold rated 1000W is going to be better than a platinum rated 750W

Something like that, pretty much all of them are going to be nearly silent, and it'll let you add in another 390 later on with ease if you ever get into 4k gaming.

Hmmm. not even much more than what I was looking at...

HX850I = high end.
RM850I = mid range.

If you're feeling insane for not much more you can get a 1300W from EVGA

I defiantly cant do the red cables, im doing a black and white build ill spend the extra $$ for the right color.

They're fully modular, I believe it's cablemods that makes replacement cables you can always change out later. Seems just about every supernova PSU is compatible

Compatibility

Definitely go for the HX850I if your debating between those 2 units. The HX850I is an analog version of the AX850I. So you lose some of the really in-depth control of voltages and other factors, although really that kind of control doesn't make a difference for day to day usage and extreme usage for all but the 1 in 10,000 user. The RM850i is a digital unit with all the software support for in-depth (and by popular consensus unnecessary) control, but it is a less efficient unit in terms of power wasted. Your more likely to stay completely fanless with the HX850I because it is more efficient and thus is more likely to stay cool and not requiring of active cooling.

Pretty much all of this.

I have an HX1000i and can confirm it is an excellent PSU. Even when the fan does come on it is still insanely quiet.

I've honestly never heard any power supply make a noise....

HX850i is realy a decent unit cant go wrong with that one.
1000W would be totaly overkill for a setup like this.
Unless you ever concider crossfire two 390´s.

I have the sightly smaller HX750i and can confirm it is as advertised, completely silent. When you get it out the box it feels and looks a quality bit of kit. My only complaint is that the internal cabling supplied are a little stiff. Personally, I would of paid more for more flexible cables. That said, it's a certified 80 plus platinum PSU, which speaks volumes in itself.

Thanks for all the awesome feedback guys!
I'm really starting to lean on the HX variant, and am slowly leaning on upping it to the 1000W model. I don't have the immediate plan to add two 390's but if a killer sale happen a year down the line adding a second GPU at that point might be a more efficient option than buying a new latest and greatest. That being said the extra like 50 bucks for the 1000W would save some money in the long run.

And just to follow this up after long mental debate... the RM1000i was the overall victor upon more research, even being gold (RMi) vrs platinum (HXi) the components used in the RMi series are of higher quality...and it matches the build very nicely!

Basicly a good choice.
You could not realy have going wrong with either of those choices.
