Risk of cyberattack for 50 million UPnP devices

"Warning: your device could be at risk of cyberattack from new online security flaws that have been exposed publicly. A recent paper published by computer and internet safety firm, Rapid7 found that around 40 to 50 million network-enabled devices could be wide open to attacks from hackers, due to a flaw in the Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) protocol.

The protocol allows devices like printers, routers and those fancy smart-TVs to be easily identifiable on a network, allowing for speedy setup and faster information sharing. The component is featured in around 7,000 different kinds of gadgets - worryingly, up to 50 million of the gadgets were susceptible to at least one of the three online security flaws outlined in Rapid7’s paper. Two of the most commonly used UPnP software libraries were both able to be exploited remotely."
