Review request for ONEXGPU on Linux

I’ve had a Framework AMD 13 for about 6 month now and been running Arch on it for some videos, tinkering, small Indy games, etc.

I’ve always wanted to play Star Citizen when I’m away from home but SC is well known to utilize a lot of resources to play the game. The Framework plays SC about 10-22fps max but it’s super consistent frames.

I’ve been looking into eGPUs but most recommendations from eGPU(.)io require either non travel friendly chassis or PCIx to thunderbolt adapters that require some tinkering to get working (also not travel friendly.

Recently, I found out about ONEXGPU enclosures and found that the ONEXGPU2 was released a few months ago with the 7800M that would hit the performance target I’ve been looking for.

$999…ouch

I ended up reluctantly buying it due to its compact size and basically being a full powered docking station with a 180W GPU that can do Thunderbolt 4 or OCuLink.

Come to find out it works great! 45-85fps at 2880x1920 native.

My question is, will there be a Linux review on this from Wendell?

Lastly, my initial updating was to update AMD ucode, update BIOS (not sure if needed), switch to a release of Mesa instead of mesa-git, but all along, it I was using a non usb4 capable cable and once I switched back to the cable from the box, everything worked like a dream.
