Remove blu ray drive and add a hdd bay possible?

I own Asus G551VW FY212T. It is a real pain in the ass how laptops have limited space for storage. I can’t add a hdd & ssd in laptop unless I remove the blu ray drive. I can’t stand the slow storage speeds from the seagate hybrid drive. The seagate hybrid drive is just too slow I’m not pleased :frowning: How can I add hdd bay on this laptop?

A caddy will do the job, but then you’d lose your Blu-ray drive indeed. Other options :

  • replace the hybrid drive with a large SSD
  • replace the hybrid drive with a smaller SSD and add a couple of 128GB low-profile USB sticks and/or a large SD card for storage
  • use an external HDD
  • sell the laptop while it’s still worth something and buy one that has room for the storage you need.

Silverstone makes a little caddy for laptops , there are similar ones on Aliexpress, but i don’t really know how good they are…

Yep, as others have said, adapter caddies are available and work fine as long as its a sata interface internally (basically all are these days). Also I recommend doing it, you’ll speed up your boot times, and you’ll be surprised how much lighter the laptop feels without the reader… they may not be crazy heavy but it makes a difference.

Also pick up a adapter to turn your old blu ray drive into a USB3 external reader… they are amazingly handy for the once in a blu moon something you need turns up on optical, and can be transferred to any PC as needed.

An example (no idea if its a good product though) is : https://www.amazon.com/Pawtec-Aluminum-External-Enclosure-Optical/dp/B00DPYXE9M

Would it be possible to take your idea, add it to @Automobili3XF’s idea, and reverse it?

Place a SSD in the caddy and convert the BluRay drive to be external for the few times he actually needs it.

Edit: Oops I guess Sheep in a cart said the same thing.

That’s very much possible indeed. Some Caddies come with an external housing in which you can put the original optical drive.

Sure, why not, there’s an adapter for that as well

Just want to add that caddies work amazingly well with no performance decrease in my experience. Try not to get something cheap from AliExpress, etc. though, you’ll just be disappointed.
