Remote NAS Access via VPN on Android

Hi, not sure where exactly to put this but I think here is relevant enough. 

I just set up a VPN on my Asus RT-N65U router for remote data access. I have a My Book World NAS HDD connected to the router. I've successfully connected to the VPN via androids inbuilt VPN client but now I'm stuck on how to proceed to access the files on the MBW. Is this even going to be possible with the MBW or will I have to wait until I get the money to build a proper NAS Server? Or would it be better to simply plug in an external HDD to the routers USB ports?

As you can probably tell this is my first time playing with a VPN. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

It looks to be the basics of getting VPN running on a LAN, moving to WAN just looks like it'll require some router setting tweeks (port forwards)
