I sadly often see this option neglected, have you heard about Xpra?
It’s intended to be the better X-over-SSH. It typically forwards single windows(but can do fullscreen/“desktop mode” as well), has persistent sessions, hardware acceleration(server and client, for encode/decode and OpenGL), SSL, and has a very nice web UI(Low latency, sound, clipboard sharing, file upload etc.).
