Remote desktop connection?

I have Windows 8.1 and want to set up a remote connection to a Windows 7 machine over the Internet. I've tried everything, I think, and still cannot get a connection. 

Have you guys got any suggestions on how to make this work? Also can I connect through a VPN?

I have used splashtop for connecting my Surface RT to my desktop. Its not good, but it works.

Is it possible with the client built into Windows?

I've tried this with the Windows client and could not get it to work. Win 7 pro to Win 7 pro. They definitely don't make it easy. I tried a few things I have found on YouTube tutorials and still no luck.

I still would love to get this to work.

I tested Android to PC remote control and it worked ok. Couldn't figure out how to double click but that might be the android interface but so far I think this will work well!

In local network remote desktop connection would be ok, but over network remote desktop connection would be problematic, of course it depends on network quality and speed. 

Did you enable Remote Desktop settings ? 

 

What error did you get? 

But best option over network would be what Nightfire37 suggested - TeamViewer!
