Reddit Going Private?

So I got home today feeling tired after work. I check my email, FB, reddit, some other sites and of course the forum, then I laid down for a nap.

But when I woke up I see that my favorite subreddit /r/starcitizen is private along with many others.

I'll post more as I'm just reading about this now.

META-MEGA Thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/outoftheloop/comments/3bxduw/_/

meta subreddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Blackout2015

in TL;DR reddit employee Victoria was laid off without warning. She was well liked and the only direct lines of contact to the admins, Other channels exist but are ignored and neglected by the admins. She helped primarily with reddit Iama's by providing concrete proof of the person and helping the whole process go smoothely with her talents. Her sacking has made people very upset.

Yup, people are getting very unhappy with the way reddit admins have been handling things, the censorship, corporate influence, opinion shaping, etc and now finally it seems an admin the community liked was fired or something and now the mods are setting their subs to private as protest of recent events.

I think this is a good thing, I hope the protest continues and things get shaken up more. I wish the majority of the users would be more aware of what's been happening so they can see the shit hole reddit is declining into. I'm not hating, I had been a redditor for a long time and loved the site, until I learned what's been going on that is.

Definitely a good thing.

I find it interesting how this is playing out, The power resides solely with the users of the site. If they want change they can force it, in this case they're locking things down on a subreddit per subreddit basis

Wow this is interesting. Thanks for posting this. I dont keep up to date with the goings on at reddit as much as I used to, so this was news to me.

Hmm looks like r/pcmasterrace is still up and not planning to join in despite some criticism from members. I wouldve thought they'd jump on this.

some of the defaults are refusing to go private and the comments within then are calling them out on it.

I never knew this subreddit existed, but the content submitted before today has an eerie feel to it.

Isnt that the snarky north korean subreddit?

nope that would be https://www.reddit.com/r/pyongyang (i think)

This subreddit was created 1-2months ago in reaction to PaoYongYang being CEO of reddit

Oh lol I misread the name :)

https://www.reddit.com/r/PaoYongYang/comments/39nymo/ellen_pao_manages_to_be_everything_reddit_hates/cs55io9

I would guild this post but that would set bad precedent

The only way that post could've been made better would be to remove all punctuation marks.

well it's formatting is complete ass lol but if you can power through it it's very interesting

a lot of subreddits are going private.
Some are not.

Most people want all the defaults to go private in protest to prove a point. (imagine a blank frontpage) Many large subreddits are not following such as ELI5 or askscience

However the list of pirvate subreddits only grows

Other large subreddits like /r/minecraft are staying open because it's their biggest weekend (minecon) and their reddit is only another medium for their community. Minecraft exists mostly elsewhere. (saying it didn't come from reddit)

Here's a good recap of all the shit going down on reddit atm https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/3bxduw/why_was_riama_along_with_a_number_of_other_large/ .

I think this is upper management literally shitting where it eats. Hoping Victoria gets her job back or at the very least a response from upper management on why she was fired. Also this is real fun to watch grabs popcorn.

This needs a category @NJM1112 ;)

nah Reddit has fallen from grace IMO. This is a worrying turn of events for sure.

Up to 75% of reddit going dark according to the front page too:

BBC article on it^

I didn't really pay attention to what was going on on reddit regarding scandals and uproars until the whole of reddit declared Pao as the new Hitler. But did it all go to shambles after she became CEO or was the ship already sinking before that?

The ship was definitely sinking before that in terms of quality of posts / comments / discussion and general ignorance of reddiquette. Some of the scandal has only made people more aware of this and I'm hoping some solid competition comes out of it, possibly out of voat or someone else.
