hi, having upgraded a Mac Pro Trash can CPU and ram I am left with a Xeon lga 2011 Cpu and Ram, looked to find a compatible motherboard to make home server to experiment with (x79) and wow the prices for an old second-hand motherboard. anybody got suggestions on a cheaper solution. thanks.
x79 is not as bad as it was a couple of years ago. x79 motherboards where maybe %30-50 more expensive in 2017 then they are now on eBay. The reason is because of people like you with leftover xeons that want a motherboard driving up the price.
You may be able to get a server motherboards cheaper. The knockoff cheap x79 boards from china do work, but are not great.
