Recommended temporary hosting service

I’m currently having issues with my modem/router port forwarding. I am running some game servers and would like to move them to a hosting service temporarily while I either get a PFsense box working or get a new modem/router so I can self host again. I was going to try Linode but saw that they had been purchased by another company a couple years ago. What is everyone using these days?

DigitalOcean or Vultr, both have been good to me.

Linode has been bought by Akamai a while ago. I have been using it since before the acquisition, but I can’t say that I’ve noticed any significant changes yet. I think the prices went up a little, but that is not a shock. I think I’ve seen an uptick in complaints about people not being able to create accounts because of suspicious activity, but I think this is happening at a lot of hosting providers.

I started a forum thread a few years ago…

There is a L1 linode referral link on the website, but I’m not sure if this is the current one… it should be $100 for 60 days. check with a mod or let me know and I’ll send you my own link.

Other ones that I have used and would recommend are vultr.com.

Akamai has been around. There is brand recognition there, unlike Comodo who has also been around and changed their name due to bad press.

Well I found out what the problem was. My ISP has changed from using regular NAT to CGNAT and didn’t think to warn anyone I guess. “Lets break everything then wait for the people to complain and fix things as they come up”.

Isn’t Vultr super scummy?

You hereby grant to Vultr a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, fully paid-up, worldwide license (including the right to sublicense through multiple tiers) to use, reproduce, process, adapt, publicly perform, publicly display, modify, prepare derivative works, publish, transmit and distribute each of your User Content, or any portion thereof, in any form, medium or distribution method now known or hereafter existing, known or developed, and otherwise use and commercialize the User Content in any way that Vultr deems appropriate, without any further consent, notice and/or compensation to you or to any third parties, for purposes of providing the Services to you.

There was some backlash, so they may have changed it…

I think they rolled it back/clarified it.

I actually just spun up a vultr instance last night to test out a homemade linux iso… and I really mean literal linux iso. It’s a rescue image for virtual machines that already has some tools and keys configured.

That clause reeks of lawyer overreach. They need the ability to publish, transmit and distribute content on your behalf in order to operate as a service provider. Which, if you look at their current TOS, they’ve got a similar clause:

As between You and Vultr, Vultr acknowledges that it claims no proprietary rights in or to Your Content. You hereby grant to Vultr a non-exclusive, worldwide and royalty-free license to copy, make derivative works, display, perform, use, broadcast and transmit on and via the Internet Your Content, solely for the benefit of You and to enable Vultr to perform its obligations under these Terms.
