Recommended memory installation order 96 GB DDR4 (Mixed Size) on AM4 3700X

Hi, I’ve a MSI B550 Gaming Plus coupled with an AMD Ryzen 3700X that builded 4 years ago with a 32GB (16x2) 3200 MT/S - TLZGD432G3200HC16CDC01.

Today I received a 64GB (32x2) - TLZGD464G3200HC16CDC01 and add it to the motherboard, loaded the XMP Profile and both kits works at the advertised timmings (CL16-18-18-38 1.35V).

No blue screen on windows, no kernel panics on linux but I have doubts about the insertion order is the most optimal for my configuration.

sudo dmidecode --type memory

Thanks.

DIMM 2-4 for the 2x32GB and DIMM 1-3 for 2x16GB.

I would also run MemTest86+ for 24h just to be sure, because loading Windows or Linux won’t stress the memory enough. AM4 boards and older CPUs had trouble with running all 4 DIMM slots with higher frequency and tighter CLs, so additional testing is advised.

If everything works and there are no errors, be happy and don’t worry. If you see any abnormal behaviour, we’ll talk.

If the memory controller is fine with everything, so am I

The DIMM are installed in the same order you posted, also did the MemTest86+ for 18 hours and all passed without problems.

I like to put ram 1 tick above rating on voltage like 1.35 I’d put 1.36 just to offset any vdroop or to give it a bit extra stability

mostly superstition/placebo

CoreyPL’s advice is sound
