That’s exactly what I suspected, as I have a similar amount that was essentially being chucked out at work. The only reason I don’t have more is that I would never have any way of using it 
That makes it pretty simple then. Spend the money on HBAs and get onto a consumer platform with your drives.

Ok so thanks to your inputs this is what I came up with for building the server into my desk .
cpu: Ryzen 5 3600
cooler: stock cooler
MB: undecided at this time
ram: 32GB 3200 DDR4
backplane: BPN-SAS2-846EL1
psu: undecided at this time
hba: undecided at this time
mellonox 10gb dac transferred from old server
and the hard drives/ssd’s
I’m interested in what you end up with as a motherboard with ECC support. I’ve read a lot of rumors but I haven’t found any good documentation.
I may temporarily stick with consumer grade mb and ram to hold me over until I can figure that out
