Hi, I’m trying to implement a storage solution for a school that is running a VMware HCI solution. They basically back up VMs from VSAN there. They now have a 2nd location and they require a block level replication between both sites. They’ve been approached by Lenovo to implement a SAN solution which is very expensive. I was thinking they could get away using a couple of 36 bay gigabyte storage servers running freenas with ZFS replication between both sites. Is there an alternative solution that they could explore?

If I understand correctly, you want to move off the hci storage and to a dedicated San solution?
Have you checked out gluster or ceph?
