I am looking for a recommendation of my set-up as below:
2 computers - 1 surface pro 7 (work) and 1 MBP 14 inch M1 pro (personal)
2 monitors - LG 4k 32 inch thunderbolt enabled monitors (2 thunderbolt 3 ports each to support daisy chain)
dell d6000 universal dock
Currently, i have connected my work pc using the dell d6000 dock and both monitors work well. However, to use macbook, i have to either change the display connection on each monitor to thunderbolt or switch off the pc and then use the usb c input from the dell dock on macbook.
I was earlier thinking of buying a TB4 dock but then thought a KVM switch would be a better idea? What do you recommend? Because dock will still have the same issue as i have in my set-up currently. That at any given time, i will be able to use 1 machine only.
I went through the KVM options but couldn’t understand which is the right one? For e.g. i looked at the DP 1.4 KVM; however not sure how will i connect it to my PC as my PC doesnt have any DP port. MY MBP too has 1 HDMI port but 3 thunderbolt 4 ports.
Also, is there a way that i can use KVM to display on a single monitor each and have both of my machines running at the same time? That will be ideal if i could do that.
It sounds like you’d be more interested in our mouse roaming KM? If you plug one PC into each, the KM would allow you to switch between the two computers, on two different monitors.
I made a brief explanation of this in a little video:
Thanks a lot for the video and the KM. That is one of the use cases i am looking for.
The other use case is to enable dual monitor setup for 3 machines and the setup i have as below:
I have one surface pro 7 and a m1 MBP 14 inch. I need one or multiple products that will allow me to use my m1 pro MBP (and keep it charged) with my office pc (surface pro 7) with 2 LG 32 UL950 thunderbolt 3 monitors (both 4k), each monitor has 2 usb c (thunderbolt 3 - upstream and downstream), 1 HDMI, 1 DP 1.4. Refresh rate for both is capped at 60 HZ. I want to connect my mouse and keyboard and other USB accessories. I also need to be able to connect my macbook to ethernet (preferably 2.5G or higher) because my router and connection supports 5 Gbps.
I also have a third machine - old MBP 13 inch (early 2011) that i have connected directly to one of the monitors via HDMI to DP (1.2) in MBP i think)?
Is there a product that will allow me to connect all 3 computers to 1 KVM switch and/or hub? What exactly do I need? I had a look at Level1techs, but don’t know exactly which model I would need.
