This warning popped up when I was using my computer (No torrent program open) - http://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/cas_alert5.jpg
I was familiar with the six strike program, and I figured I would just go on without a vpn until my first warning. All of sudden, today, I get that message. I never use my comcast email which is apparently where they sent it, and never remember receiving a call from them. It also says mitigation measures are about to be applied. Does that mean if I hit the sixth strike they will, or they are already in the process. Should I be worried and take action, or just continue on with a vpn? Thanks for the help in advance, I really appreciate it. (I chose the best category I could find. If there is a better one please let me know.)
Are you sure it isn't spam? I've downloaded thousands of torrents on Comcast and never even heard of such a thing?
What is the sending email address.
It popped up exactly the way you saw it over my browser and multiple virus free computers. It was not an email.
If it was a pop-up, I wouldn't be worried. I'd think official communications would be through phone, mail, or email.
Disclaimer: I don't have Comcast.
Try emailing or calling them or something. It is possible that someone was using your wifi in order to torrent or something and they caused and ok-ed the first four. Good thing you caught it before 6. Get this straightened out. Until then, change the wifi password and don't let anyone on who you don't know won't torrent.
IIRC something about them sending the alerts directly to the user using the network for the offense. (I'll double check this)
If that's the case you have someone using your wifi that already used strikes 1-4
Relevant:
I just got like my 5th notice from CenturyLink. The first 4 times they just redirected my browser to a website of theirs where I had to fill out a survey to get internet access back. This last time I actually had to call in/chat with a rep. I have not torrented since, and I don't know if I even want to with a VPN (don't know how effective they are if an ISP really wants to know where/what your traffic is).
I am going to switch to a new startup ISP that offers fiber to the home @ 1gbps for 70 a month, then get a VPN before I torrent again.
looks like phishing attack. download malwarebytes and scan your pc. This shouldn't pop up on its own or ask you to login anywhere.
In short too much p0rn.
Comcast sends normal letters if your account has a copyright strike. They never do such.
Once again, thanks to everyone for the input. I highly doubt someone is using our connection, since the router barely reaches the edge of my home and the only neighbors that would be in range definitely wouldn't have a reason or the skill to do that. I also checked connected devices on my router and found nothing out of the ordinary. Only trusted devices were connected. Also, I have antivirus, and the message was showing up on two clean computers. One was connected via WiFi and one via Ethernet.
I never received any calls from them, nor any physical mail. As for my Comcast email, I'm going to contact them to gain access to the password since I've never used it and it is still on the stock password. Maybe there was something sent to that email. Regardless of whether they sent me an email, I will not be held legally liable for something I was not aware of. I will update everyone on what happens. Further input is appreciated.
