Rear USB 3.0 ports stopped working

Hello everyone, I've been having a very annoying problem with my motherboard and I cannot seem to find a solution...

I use a Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H motherboard and have had it for a year and a half, maybe more. About 2 months ago, while using it, my keyboard just stopped working but the lights stayed on. Thinking it was the keyboard crapping out since it's so old, I just unplugged it and plugged it back in. It worked.... But my mouse stopped working. So I unplugged that too, and it worked! But the keyboard stopped working again... I restarted my PC, plugged them in different USB 3.0 ports on the back and the same problem kept on happening.

A little side note, I have my Blue Yeti mic plugged into one USB 3.0 port and that seems to always work fine.

At this point, I figured it was both my keyboard and mouse that were not working, so I waited for my new Cooler Master keyboard to come in and I went out and bought a new mouse. Plugged them in and it worked! For about 15 minutes.... Then it started all over again. I ended up contacting Gigabyte and set up an RMA. After almost a month waiting on my motherboard, I finally get it back and rushed to set things up again. The first day everything worked perfectly until day 2 came along and it started again.

So I'm not sure if Gigabyte got the motherboard, cleaned it and sent it back, but I asked for ANOTHER RMA and asked for a new motherboard, but of course, out of stock. So now I have 2 options.

1. Send it to Gigabyte to get it cleaned again.

2. Try and figure out what the hell is going on here, but I don't know how to do that so I came to this forum to hopefully find someone who can help me.... Because gaming on a laptop is not as fun as people make it out to be.

One other side note.. This may have been caused by a thunderstorm that happened about a day before this started. Lighting hit somewhere in my neighborhood and my PC was plugged in at the time. If that is the case, I got away easy compared to some of my neighbors...

well the lightning could indeed have caused it.

What happens wenn you unplug the yeti? and then use keyboard and mouse? maybe its an usb power problem. But its offcourse strange then this started after lightning storms.

You could try a bios update offcourse, and you could check for newer usb drivers on the website from Gigabyte, ou boaght a new keyboard and mouse.

you could check the usb ports on physical damage, like bended pins and what not. just check inside the usb port if all ports are fine, if one port has a bended pin this could lead to issues aswell, also check the front usb ports on the case, also try to unplug them from the mobo.

If that all is not working, you could try to re-install windows. (maybe on a spare HDD) or something, so that you dont toutch your current OS.

If that still does not solve the problems, then there must be something with the board it self, which im personaly affraid off.

It can realy be tons of things...

I just looked at the USB 3.0 pins and they all seem perfectly fine, and whenever I would unplug the yeti and use the keyboard and mouse, the same thing would happen. It seems that the yeti works just fine at all times.. I was also going to update my bios but it seems Gigabyte doesn't bother with z77 anymore, since the two new bios updates are beta and have been that way for a while, I just don't want to deal with beta drivers at this point lol. Also the front USB ports work just fine, they charge my phone and I've used usb sticks on them before and didnt have any issues.

Im gonna try the cd that comes with the motherboard again and see if I can find anything on there, thanks for the help!

it still sounds strange.

maybe you could clear the cmos. offcourse you need to re-set date and time after that again in bios but still. you could give it a try.

You might also check the usb hub controllers in device manager to see if your system is trying to power save your seperate usb connections. Which is kind of hopeful but possible.

I ended up using the lowest usb ports on the back and everything has been great, it just seems the top 2 and the one near where the yeti is plugged in that are having issues... So 3 out of 6 work, im gonna keep trying other things, thanks for the help!

I ended up disabling any usb power saving going on, that may be the problem, because I've had times where I get prompted that a device like my phone is using too much power.. 3 out of 6 of the usb 3.0 ports arent working, im gonna try them now and let it run for a little and see what happens. Thanks for the help!
