Readynas 104 slow network speeds

hey guys, need some help, im ok with networking but still learning,

My ReadyNas 104 has 3 4tb hdds (seagate ironwolf) set up in raid 5, yet the transfer speeds are between 30 and 35 megs a second.

The NAS is connected to the router thru gigabut ethernet, and pc i am copying files to the nas is also through gigabit ethernet,

The router is a bt smart hub 5/latest model.

before the raid 5 i used to get mostly gigabit ethernet speeds, nearer 100 meg a second minus the overhead. But now between 30 and 35, but sometimes even as low as 5 megs a second towards the end of a file transfer.

I checked the speeds both devices where reporting, and both report a network connection of 1 gigabit

Also had an error when trying to connect to the mapped drive. Windows reported an error stating that the semaphore period had expred, but a reboot of the nas and windows seems to have solved the issue (for now!!)

Reviews online have results of the readynas not showing such a performence defecit when raid 5 is in use.

The PC being used to transfer files over is as follows;

CPU - Amd Athlon 860k stock
Motherboard - A88x Gigabyte dh3p - f2a88xm
RAM - 8 gigs 1600 mhz
GPU - NVIDIA GTX 950
PSU - Corsair 430 watt
boot drive - SATA 120 gig ssd
HDD - 4 TB Seagate Ironwolf
CPU Cooler - CoolerMaster Seidon 120v 120 ml AIO

Any Help welcome

Andy

Still working after that reboot?

This may be a stupid question, but have you tried copying a large, read 1-2 GB, file to and from the server? In my experience with RAID 5 on FreeNAS, a large number of small files will have a lower transfer speed than a large single file.

If your connection at the switch/router is showing gigabit, your vabling should be okay.

yes it still works after i rebooted the nas but the transfer speed is still 35 - 40 megabytes per sec

cheers

i was copying only large files averaging 10 to 30 gigabytes, no small files are in the transfers.

i also just tried another connection to the nas via router from a different pc which also has gigabuit ethernet and cat 5e cables and still same speed. so maybe its just how this nas deals with a raid 5 parity raid and it gets slowed down?

cheers
