Raspi y u no love me?

Hello everyone, here I am again with another Raspberry topic (who would've guess that, huh?)
I'm a bit in a blind spot right now because I don't know how or what to do: I bought an Enermax EB308S-B to use a 500GB HDD on my Raspberry. The disk is not being mounted (a generic USB2.0 drive FAT32 gets mounted automagically) but I can see it in the output of the lsusb command.

Here's the output:
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 174c:55aa ASMedia Technology Inc. ASMedia 2105 SATA bridge
(along with all the other jazz connected to it)

Also here's the dmesg output:
(might be helpful I hope)

Thanks for whoever will answer me. Everyone here has always been helpful and kind here, that's why I keep asking you guys.

If I may ask, why do you need a 500 GB drive?

That's not the point of the thread but I'll answer anyway lol
I'm making a NAS out of it, to stream movies and music. Also I'd like to do a timelapse with my C920 and I need somewhere to store files on.

Oh okay neat. Thx I was just curious. It does seem like the drive should pop up huh? Stupid level coming..... It is spinning right.

Welcome! Yeah, it spins no problem. I can hear it ramping up and the head detaching when it's connected. On every PC at home works and I can copy files back and forth from it. Has been formatted multiple times and I tried different filesystem (EXT3, EXT4 and NTFS). Now it's NTFS formatted and the Raspberry have the ntfs-3g packages installed.

I also connected it to an LG Smart TV and it works. I think webOS wich LG tv's are based on have a Linux kernel, if I recall correctly.

The Raspbery Pi doesn't have enough power to give to a External HDD.
Unless it has it's own power that you plug into a wall outlet.

If the platters are not spinning then there's no power going to the Ext. HDD.

It's a 3.5" adapter with it's own power supply and the disk, as I said to Aremis before, it's spinning no problem.
I also mentioned the model number of the adapter I'm using to attach the disk to the Raspberry.

Some commands you can try

lsblk
fdisk -l

If it's not showing your drive then try unplug.
tail -f /var/log/messages
then plug back in
You should see your device show up

This link might help if that doesn't help

https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=53832

Thanks for the answer. I tried the first two commands before and didn't have much luck.
This is the output of tail -f /var/log/messages

The disk is still not showing as a mass storage device.

plug it to your pc, and divide to 64GB partitions or so - try making partitions of size 16, 32, 64, 128, 256; i think arm cpu is unable to support that size of partition. You may need to put ext on it etc...

also check if you see anything in fdisk -l

you may need to create a mounting point, and edit fstab.

(check if anything was added to /dev/ directory)

I've seen people connecting 1TB drives formatted as one partition so I don't think there lies the problem.

No sign of the disk, already tried billions of time.

If the volume is not shown in the fdisk I can't create any link in fstab because there's no mounting point sda1 for example to put in.

Empty as the desert.

what distro are you using again?

Raspbian Jesse, updated and upgraded as of today.

Not really sure. Only few things I see you can do.

  • Drivers for your USB chipset or hardware not loaded or not working properly (try updating kernel if possible)
  • Hard drive is not powered on or not getting enough power
  • Physical issue with USB cable or port (in this case it's being read)
  • Try different USB ports if you haven't already
  • Try a USB Hub if you have one
  • A lot of other forums and posts I'm seeing suggest a USB Hub (might help)

Here's another article that might help you. Hopefully.
https://www.modmypi.com/blog/how-to-mount-an-external-hard-drive-on-the-raspberry-pi-raspian

are you running as a root? from what we see in logs your external drive is discovered and installed.
Question is - does this drive work? (lets say it does work) it must be placed in /dev/sdX format, also check sudo blkid see if you see it.

This is the only issue I might be having really. Everything else as been done properly and tested.

My user is a sudoer so I give sudo before every important command, basically yeah.

This is the blkid output (spoiler: the drive is not there):

/dev/mmcblk0p1: SEC_TYPE="msdos" LABEL="boot" UUID="04FE-51E9" TYPE="vfat" PARTUUID="8f1eafaf-01"
/dev/mmcblk0p2: UUID="e6e7f776-11a4-4cd7-b4fd-c44ecdbfcf90" TYPE="ext4" PARTUUID="8f1eafaf-02"
/dev/mmcblk0: PTUUID="8f1eafaf" PTTYPE="dos"

ok, are you sure the drive is working?

Not sure what OS you are running but I know there was an update to Raspbian recently.
Hopefully it works out for you.

I tried to do a Samba project myself with a Ext. HDD and had the same issue.
Well, my issue was that there wasn't enough power to the Ext. HDD.

That's the only thing I can think of.
