Random restarts with Linux on new hardware (Completely Random)

Good day all.
I'm new to the forum and created my account today to ask a questions that's been driving me crazy for the last week. I've was introduced to Linux by a work colleague and have been playing around with a few distros, namely Ubuntu Unity,Ubuntu Gnome, Mint and Elementary. Installations of all three went well on a old Lenovo laptop I had laying around the house. However my experience changed after trying the distro's on a desktop of mine. Specs listed below.

  • Intel Pentium 3250
  • Gigabyte h81m-s2v v3.0
  • 4gb ADATA 1600mhz RAM
  • Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 960
  • to list the main items

A few strange things happened, and in no particular order i experienced the following...
The computer randomly restarts without warning, like someone unplugged the machine;

  1. While using Linux in Live mode (Booted from USB)
  2. While installing Linux (During installation process)
  3. While using the installed version (Sometimes installation completes and I'm able to used the distro for a while and install all latest updates and drivers.

Longest I went without restart was 3 hours. Nothing specifically causes the restart, at one point the machine was on idle.

Restarting of the computer happens (all 3 points listed above) while i'm running Linux alongside my Win8.1 installation, and when i install linux on its own dedicated hard drive with my Win8.1 hard drive unplugged.

I'v also noticed the following, if I have Linux installed alongside Win8.1 and booted into Windows using the Grub Menu (Dual booted system) even my Windows OS acts up like Linux (Restarting at random). Only after removing the Linux partition and repairing my Windows MBR it becomes stable again.

Please NOTE: The machine is rock solid (with no restarts) when running Windows in its native way (No dual booted setup with Linux)

The above scenario occurs with all three the distros mentioned earlier in the post, also to note, all three these distro's operate complete fine on the old lenovo laptop.

I've have played around with BIOS settings, updated the BIOS and everything I can think of.

One last note (With each distro when used on the desktop, i get a strange PCI PCC error apon boot and got stuck. However this was fixed by disabling the on-board Intel display in BIOS. Error still displays, however it passes over it and boots.

Thank you.
Looking forward to your thoughts.

Run dmesg and post it here (in a spoiler plz)

Also did you install the nvidia drivers?
assuming no then lets do that
open a terminal and type or paste the following 3 commands
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-352
then reboot

nvidias drm makes linux much more difficult than it needs to be
My computer does the exact same thing until I install gpu drivers (never had the windows issue however I don't use win h8)

Hi. I'll run the command and report back. However, The restarts occurs at random even while running as Live demo. Further on, Yes I've installed the latest compatable Nvidia Drivers for the system.
And as mentioned, the system even reboots when I setup a dual boot environment and booted into Windows. Maybe a "Grub" issue, not sure.

Thanks for the reply

Did all this happen with all 3 distro's?

Yes, All three of them.
Took me a week to go through all the troubleshooting a can think of.

Hi I ran dmesg, see below. I also tried installing Ubuntu Gnome 16.4, running Kernel 4.2.2, however still restarts like a BOSS.....

All the distros you tried are off the same base so you really just tried the same distro over again.

You could try a different distro like Fedora and see what your results are.

But this sounds more like a hardwre problem. Does the computer have secure boot? Maybe disable that, though im not sure that it would cause this kind of problem.

It actually sounds like a power issue, but if as you say it works fine with only windows installed than somethings not right. Grub just tells the computer to go to the windows bootloader, it doesnt touch windows.

Thank you for your reply.
I will give Fedora a go as well. It's definitely not a hardware issue, I've since installed windows on a clean separate hard drive yo make use of the machine while diagnosing the linux installation.
Windows is running without a hickup.

NOTE: secure boot has been disabled.

Thanks.
