So I was having random crashes, and I googled the problem, and the ubuntu forums said to update the bios. So I went to the website and downloaded the .cap file. When I tried to flash it, it said it was not a proper bios. What should I do?
We might need a bit more info first. What are your computer specs. What is the distro you are using. Also I wouldn’t go the bios update rout I have never needed to update my bios on any of my computers so save that for last resort.
Yes. We need more information. What does it do when it crashes? Does software stop responding? Does the entire system freeze? Does the screen go black? We'll try to help, but we need more to go on.
My computer is
APU: AMD A10 7870k
MB: Asus A68HM series
RAM: 8 gigs of G Skill @ 2133 Mega Herts
SSD: Adata 240 Gig
PSU: EVGA 500w 80+
OS: Ubuntu Gnome
When my computer crashes it freezes up, and what ever audio was playing just creates a short loop. The screen goes black except for the mouse.
What version of Ubuntu Gnome is it the lts version
15.10
Now is there a specific reason you when for that version because its usually advised you stick to an lts version which at this point would be 14.04.3 lts
I was afraid that since I use an apu it wouldn't have good enough hardware support, so I went bleeding edge
Okay I am now running the Ubuntu Gnome 14.04. I will let you guys know if it solved my problem.
When my computer crashes it freezes up, and what ever audio was playing just creates a short loop. The screen goes black except for the mouse.
Can you move your mouse when it freezes up? I've seen something similar happen on my system. I hammered it down to a DRM (direct renderiung manager, not digital rights management) issue.
What kind of video card do you have? Is it Intel?
No I can't move it
I am using the iGPU in the apu.
This is from an older post. You're not the only one having this problem. A lot of people are.
It didn't quite copy the way I wanted it to. If you have trouble sorting through it, hit the arrow in the upper right corner. It will take you to the original post.
I am using an AMD APU, this only applies to intel iGPUs.
Alright, first question: did 14.04 fix the issue?
If not, can you give me the output of the following commands?
lsmod
lspci -nnv
uname -rm
From here, we can try to figure out if it's a driver issue, configuration issue, or a bug. I'm starting to think it's an issue with the GPU drivers. AMD drivers are a bit of a mess right now. For those of us who have a GPU which supports the amdgpu module, it's working quite well. For those without a supported card, it's not fun at all. You should have support, see the APU listing. Yours is a Godavari APU. Looking at the amgpu compatibility listing, the archwiki claims that there is only support for volcanic islands cards and some cards from sea islands.
It seems to be working so far
It started crashing again. Here is the stuff you asked for.

you're using the AMD open source driver. Try going into settings -> additional drivers and install the proprietary drivers. That will probably be helpful.
Okay I am now using the proprietary driver.
